I would say it would be around 1965-7 ish, in Derek Kevan/ Johnny Crossan's era.... City v Liverpool......A fist fight broke out before the match in the centre circle between the City mascot, who would be around eighteen years old, dressed in City colours, shirts, shorts, socks and Liverpool's mascot.

The police had to run on to pull them apart...I seem to remember one of them tried to wrestle a flagpole off the other.......

Also Everton's mascot, dressed like an old maid, used to go round the perimeter throwing sweets into the crowd from a wicker basket...hence their nickname "the toffees".....

Happy days....:-)

Don't remember the mascot fight but sounds entertaining. I do remember the toffee maid though. Happy days indeed!

I've heard this story before. Wasn't it before the start of our 1967/68 title winning season in the 0-0 draw with Liverpool opening game of the season?

Could be, sounds about right. I was right at the front of the (old) Kippax on the centre line... remember it quite clearly...They were trading blows for about a minute before it was stopped...lol!

Yes spot on i was there first match of season 67/68.Centre circle fight
good old days.

I remember this. It was 66-67 so Johnny Crossan era all right but too late for Derek Kevan. The City mascot was about 14 and was wearing a City kit. The Liverpool mascot was about the same age and was wearing a big hat and a red cloak and was carrying a Liverpool flag. Both were parading in front of their own supporters' ends, the Liverpool mascot at the old Scoreboard end and the City mascot at the Platt Lane end. There was a bit of long distance banter when suddenly they both rushed at each other and met in the centre circle. The Liverpool mascot raised his flagpole to strike the end into the City mascot but the City mascot did a fantastic dive and roll and took the Liverpool mascot's feet from under him. They then proceeded to kick the shit out of each other until they were separated and hauled off the pitch.

The City lad had been mascot at home games for several games before that but was summarily banned from Maine Road by the club. Good entertainment though.

I also remember the Everton toffee lady. Then there was Ken Baily, a strange bloke with a hare lip, who was the Arsenal mascot. He used to parade around the pitch home and away in a ringmaster's outfit and union jack waistcoat with a sign reading "We Arsenal supporters say may the best team win". He was also the official England mascot. That is until he got tangled up with accusations of being a paedo, never to be seen at Wembley or Highbury again.

Love it. Before my time but I seriously got the full picture there.

The City mascot was the regular one. The Liverpool (unofficial) mascot was dressed as Batman. It was better pre-match entertainment than the Beswick Prize Band.

It was certainly far too late for Derek Kevan who left before City were promoted. It was Johnny Crossan's final season at Maine Road.

That's what I thought until an Everton fan once told me that there are Everton toffees as well as the well known Everton mints.
