I don't see a big difference to be honest. These days, some replicas are incredibly well made. I think there’s a great book issued through this amazon kindle direct publishing that dives deep into this topic—comparing original watches with high-end replicas. Some of those replicas are so good it’s hard to tell unless you’re a real expert. It's fascinating how close they can get in terms of design and even weight and feel. Definitely worth a read if you're into watches

I’ve been on a submariner no date list since 2020.

I was in the Breitling shop a couple of months ago just browsing and I got talking to the salesman , a nice lad who could only have been 19 or 20. Convo turned to Rolex and my waiting list issue and he stops me and pulls up his sleeve to reveal a shimmering submariner. 18th birthday present he said. Lucky lad
That's a fair wait. Have you been showing your face and keeping in touch with the AD ?

I put my name on the list at 2 AD's for a Sub no date just over 12 mths ago. Kept in touch via email and popping in when I was in the area. Each time I was told nothing doing yet, it will be at least another 12 mths.

Was in the area about a month ago and called in at AD no1 and was told the usual, nothing doing and it would be difficult to get one anytime soon as I had no spend history with them. Also told me that no dates were harder to come by than the date model. Left and went to AD no2 where I was told a similar thing, except that I could have a Sub date in 2 mths if I gave them a deposit. Was quite taken aback by that as I really wasn't expecting to be offered anything. While it was a welcome offer, I really wanted a no date so told him I'd think about it over the weekend.

Thought I'd try the first AD and see if I could get a Sub date from them so emailed them and told them that I had been offered a Sub date from another AD but really wanted a no date but if I couldn't get the no date I would go with the date model from the other AD.

The next morning I got a call from AD no 1 saying he had just had that weeks stock list come in and there was one no date Sub on it and he had reserved it for me if I want it...............do bears shit in the woods. Collected it a couple of days later.

When I collected it I asked the sales guy if I could go on the GMT and Daytona list, sorry no, both are full.

I've always said I wouldn't do the dealer dance, even though I have the money to buy new. It's just a piss take.
I go to my local a.d. quite regularly wearing one of my omegas and they always enquire if I'd consider a rolex. Yes, I say, but not the one you want to sell me, I.e. an air king or an oyster perpetual. I'll take a submariner home today if you have one. Oh no, there's a wait for those. Ok bye.
So I bought this instead of a new oneScreenshot_20250414_223450_Samsung Internet~2.jpg

Pleased for you mate, hope you enjoy it

Tbh i'm not a natural schmoozer so although initially i did keep in touch with a couple of phone calls and emails i've let it slide. Although the guy i was in touch with seemed like a good bloke i got the feeling that i was just a puppet on a string that these guys are trying to manipulate into buying a less sought after piece.

That said, inspired by your story, i might dig his number out.

Just go grey market mate. Pay a bit over the odds for the watch you actually want. Look after it and keep all the boxes and papers, it will still hold its value, and increase over the years.
Just make sure you get a nice example with all the documents.

That looks like a christopher ward to me, going by the logo.
Quartz movement in this I think, but pretty decent value I'd say, if I was an Everton fan and a watch enthusiast I'd probably buy it.

Not had a watch since I was a kid, don’t see the point of ‘em and I don’t like the feel of them on my wrist. After 45-odd years without one, I caved to pressure from the Mrs and got the Apple Watch thing so I (she) can track my health and exercise. Been a waste of money tbh, I forget to wear it 95% of the time. In fact, I’ve not even seen it for the last few weeks and come to think of it, I’ve no idea where it is.
I’ve no problem with people spending their money on what they like, but these watches that are the cost of a decent car and more, it’s just insane to me.

Me neither but then I place little value on possessions, bling etcetera. A few things that have sentimental value I keep but that could be something dirt cheap.
Watch collecting, and horology in general, is difficult to explain.
I have watches that are worth 20 quid, up to the submariner kermit worth 15k.
They are all valid pieces, they have history, they represent a moment in time, they capture an era.
Watchmaking is an art in itself, combining fine engineering with design.
Some are sound investments, some are just wrist candy, some can save a life.
But they are all interesting, from the first mechanical clock, to pocket watches that pilots modified to fit over a flying jacket, to the modern tool watch divers we see today. And the quartz era which nearly killed off the Swiss watch making industry.
All absolutely fascinating to an engineer.

I've never heard of Jacob and Co, so I thought I'd look them up.

The jeweler started collaborating with entertainers on custom designs. In the 1990s he was one of the first jewelers to create big diamond jewels for men, a trend that is mainstream today.

Hip-Hop stars who were Arabo's clients included Sean "Puffy" Combs, Biz, Jay-Z, Drake, 50 Cent, and Big Sean.

football star, Cristiano Ronaldo, was named as a Jacob & Co.'s ambassador to promote the Ghost Five Time Zone timepiece collection.

Jacob & Co. unveiled the Billionaire watch with a price tag of $18 million. The 18k white gold case and bracelet was covered with 260 carats of diamonds, with each individual gem weighing 3 carats each. It was purchased by professional boxer Floyd Mayweather in 2018.

So you're in good company if you buy one then. Just need to sell one to Conor McGregor and they've completed their **** collection.

Agreed, love watching videos of watches being taken apart and serviced.

Thanks, I' fully indeed to.

I don't feel as though I did any "schmoozing" just played the game and in the end played the dealer at their own game to a degree to get the watch I wanted.

They will want you to buy other stuff that you really don't want to build up a spend history. I told them at the outset that I wasn't interested in other jewellery or other watches especially precious metal ones.

Worth another ago if you really want that watch.
