Skysports.com understands Manchester City and Sunderland have sent scouts to check on Rennes' Rod Fanni.
Both clubs will have representatives at Rennes' Ligue 1 clash away at St Etienne on Tuesday.
They will be there to run the rule over 28-year-old full-back Fanni, who has seen his profile rise considerably over recent years.
The combative defender has shot to prominence since joining Rennes in 2007, with the likes of Everton and West Ham United reported to have expressed an interest in his services in the recent past.
Fanni has also forced his way into the France national side during his time at Route de Lorient.
He made his debut for Les Bleus against Tunisia in October 2008 and now has four full caps to his name.
The highly-rated defender is contracted to Rennes until 2012, but could be lured to England for the right price.
City and Sunderland feel he could be a usual addition to their respective defensive units and will make a decision on their next move once their scouts reports back to base.
The use of 'SkySports news understands' makes me naturally skeptical following Flamini's 'signing' today!
