I'd love to hear why you believe marine biology is useless. If you're determined and driven enough then there's a very good chance you'll get a job you'll enjoy. Just speaking for myself, i can't think of too much worse (within reason) than commiting 40-50 years of my life to a profession that's mind-numbingly dull, no matter how well it pays. I know that if my job was shit, i'd be a miserable, tired and bitter bastard when i got home at night aswell. It's difficult once you clock off to forget the fact that the next morning you have to get up and carry on with the same monotonous pish that you've spent the whole of your working life doing, i'm sure we've all seen how it wears people down. If i have kids i'd prefer them to grow up in a home where their father isn't in a fucked off mood all the time, even if it meant they couldn't get the newest games console or watch Sky tv all day.

I don't think its utterly useless, in fact if you live by the sea or in Australia or somewhere where you can use your qualification then i should imagine its a brilliant career.. all i meant was i think you should definitely have an idea of a career in your head as well as what course you want to study.. what do you want to do with the degree that your paying a lot of money for at the end of uni??

I've seen too many of my friends either drop out to pursue what they see as good jobs because at the age of 19 it pays what they think is god money whereas if they had planned what they wanted to do they could be looking forward to what you say.. a good job that they enjoy. On the other hand some of them have gone on and completed their degrees on the conveyor belt that is the education system these days then get to the end and appear lost, not knowing what to do with their lives now that the government haven't got another form for them to fill in for the next stage of their lives..

The rest of your life is a long time and the job that I have now is by far the best I have ever had... Before this I have worked 12 hour night shifts emptying wagons in a warehouse, something like that s the sort of job where you come home annoyed every night. Now i have money in my pocket to book holidays, go snowboarding, go watch city whenever i want, go out whenever i want go to nice restaurants and do all the things that make life worth living, that is the most important thing for me..

believe me pal , the most 'important' thing in life is good health . without it , fuck all else is possible .

Hiya Ponka, I am at Uni in Edinburgh now, reading Social Anthropology and Social Work, Not bad for a 52yr old who stood on the Kippax as a lad and used to work at Howells Radio Ltd. Its never too late to learn but do something that means something to you, many of the popular courses will be over subscribed and then it down to your "A" level results. Look at all the Unis online and see which one best suit what you want to do and not what you feel you should be doing.

Try and go for something that you are genuinely interested in, not what you think will get you rich. If you're doing a subject you like, chances are there will be lots of other similar people who have the same interests as you, if you go for the money you'll be surrounded by bitching wankers who'll screw anyone over if they reckon they'd be better off for it.

Then if you're lucky you might get a job you actually enjoy, not too many of those around. If you enjoy your job then who gives a fuck if you can't afford 79.5 inch plasma TV's, a 12 bedroom house and a Merc, those kind of thing are comforts for people who have a shit work life.

Wise words. Didn't quite work out for me though. Did something i'd enjoy, not for the money etc. but felt suffocated by the education system. Felt more like being prepared for life as an adult...and as an ideal employee. Ended up failing my first year anyway.

Might go back in Sep but i'll be 27 by then and don't feel like hanging about with loads of posh kids again.

Stay at home, our Uni's is up there with the best and pass rate.

Do a useful apprenticeship instead. You will be laughing in a few years' time, rather than jobbing in an outbound call centre.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Has anyone on here dropped out of uni before? Is it easy to just leave? or do they keep telling you to stay?

I am seriously considering it after only about 8 weeks. I just dont like it at all.

I have been sat trying to do a 2500 word essay for 10 hours and have done feck all, Its just an absolute pile of crap (my work).

I am going to speak to my tutor next week about it. I dont understand anything in the lectures, and the seminars I look a complete thicko because I cant answer any of the questions.

It's easy to leave, but just because your not enjoying your course just now, doesn't mean you should. Your tutor, if they're any good, will probably tell you all your options, changing course or whatever. I wouldn't make any rushed decisions, some people take ages to adapt to Uni after school, it's totally different. There's loads of people that i speak to that really regret dropping out of Uni or College.
