Are the Hughes outers justified?

boring........

Just face facts............Hughes is staying at least until the end of the season whether you, me or anyone else likes it or not.
We can have this debate in the middle of may next year..........lets see how we go ffs

I think he'll be here until the end of the season as well, maybe even longer.

But I like these debates. If you find them boring I recommend clicking on a different thread.

Theres at least one thread a day on this subject though.............you dont think thats boring ??

No.

If I did I wouldn't click on the link and read them. I even find the hourly moaning about moaners threads interesting, thats why I read them as well. Beats working.

As a defence to the Hughes outers, I keep hearing the following...

"we're 6th with a game in hand"
"we've only lost once all season"
"we're in the quarter finals of the Carling Cup"
the City of old would have lost (insert games)"

On the surface all seems well but there is also another side to these quotes/cliches. I hope we can use this thread to discover what the majority deem is acceptable when assessing our performnces this season. I'm going to explain why i don't think the above quotes (and again i stress, they are quotes i have seen multiple times on this forum over the last few weeks)are very good yardsticks of how the team is performing and in how the management are performing...

"we're 6th with a game in hand"
We are 6th, but we've won less than half our games, against what you would call poor sides. Infact only Villa, Scum and Arsenal have been opponents most people would be wary of. I'd imagine that even before the takeover, the majority on here would predict a win for us over the likes of Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wolves, Burnley etc. It's also worth baring in mind that games against Wolves, Blackburn and Portsmouth could have quite easily ended up as draws (if it wasn't for Given). You'd also have to say he saved us from defeat against Birmingham. A bad refereeing decision stopped West Ham from equalizing against us at home, and shocking finishing was the only reason Fulham didn't put 4 or 5 past us on our own pitch.

"we've only lost once all season"
We might have only lost once all season, but there is no trophy or reward for not losing games. Draw's don't put many points on the board. Infact 38 draws would probably see you relegated. That's the sort of form we are showing at the moment. 5 games against mediocre opposition (villa aside) and 5 draws. Only Given and lady luck prevented us from losing to Birmingham and Fulham. Hell even Wigan had a goal disallowed.

"we're in the quarter finals of the Carling Cup"
We might also be in the quarter finals of the Carling Cup, but again i point to the opposition. 2 really poor championships sides and the reserve team of a mediocre (this season) Premier League team. We even needed extra time to win that one. I understand we can only beat what's infront of us, but i'd take heart from at least looking comfortable in doing so.

the City of old would have lost... those 5 games"
And the final quote i keep reading is...."The City of old would have lost this game". This is a quote in which i was familar with last season, because it was said on here everytime we drew a game that we should have won, and has been used after every single one of our last 5 draws. Strictly speaking, it's true. The City of old has yo-yo'd between the top 2/3 divisions over the last decade or so. The very best City side of the last decade finished 8th. The problem is, we are not the City of old. We are a team of supposedly very talented and expensive players. We aspire to beat the very beatable sides of the division and when we show no indication of doing so, despite on paper having one of the strongest squads in the league, it does become quite worrying.

Moving away from the above, the thing that worries me is the fact that on the field, we look a mess. We look like an accident waiting to happen at the back. We have nobody who can control the midfield and nobody to drive the game to our opponents. We have pacey flair players who aren't creating many chances. We have an abundance of players who quite clearly don't fit into Hughes' new 4-4-2 formation. We just don't look like a good side. Even when winning.

Now i've not actually made my mind up about Hughes. I like him, he comes across well, he says the right things, he backs the club 100% in the media, he almost tapped up John Terry, he got the best out of Ireland last season, he tries to shut the media up about Robinho. I like the guy. But the above worries me. I feel eventually he probably will become a very good manager, but at the moment i'm worried about our team. I guess time will tell and gelling will help a lot, but in the mean-time, are the Hughes outers justified?

ono Your forgetting the classic from last year.

Its not his team, let him build a team with his own players over the next couple of transfer windows

Which this season is starting to turn into.

The players he's bought aren't his players there just the players that were available in the transfer window.

Reasons to keep Hughes:
They say a change is as good as a rest so I say keep him, he's hardly over worked.
We only employ welsh back room staff and there's none left to replace him with.
Roque will play crap without him.
There will be no more Hughes out threads.
He hates Ferguscum
His hair is blue/grey

For all the Hughes supporters, you say give him time he'll get it right.

Please tell me,what do you base that view on???...tactical decisions?not a chance.Motivational skills?Nope.style of play?Again a big no no.

Answers please

Im not a complete Hughes outer but those who are,are definitely justified in what they say

I don't think they are justified at all, some not all just want him to fail without thinking that a new guy comes in will probably want his own squad so we will be back to square one.

The key problem has been the influx of new players every window since the summer of '08 the squad just hasn't had the time to settle. Look at the team against Burnley as a classic example of those that started only Ireland had played in the 07-08 season in fact most had come Jan 09 onwards Given Lescott Bridge Barry Adebayor Tevez Bellamy Toure. Added to that due to injuries etc the team had chopped and changed. Tactics and systems take time to get across no matter how good the player is. And it also takes time for the manager to find the best system to suit what players.

Providing they all stay fit there is a chance for the next two months of seeing a settled squad and hopefully a chance to see our real potential that is till Jan when we lose players to the Africa Cup Of Nations. Hughes does deserve the chance to get us through to the end of the season and lets see where we are. Chairmans target was top 6 and ok recent form hasn't been good even some of the wins where lucky but we are on target and teams we are trying to go and replace are dropping points which helps got a feeling 70 points or less will get 4th this year Arsenal managed 72 last season. We are 6th with issues that can be solved and much as people hate the words we are a work in progress.

I have to say i've been a happy clapper (Hughes in etc) I defended him to the hilt last season. I'm not about to turn on him now but I have a few issues.

Our tranfer policy has been pretty hit and miss.

Of this summers in's I have to say the only one which looks like it will be a major success will be Ade (Unless we continue to fire long balls at his head).

Tevez im afraid doesnt fit into the shape of the team for me. I think Ireland should be playing as the 2nd deep lying forward player. The 10 minutes he had against Villa & the 15 mins directly after half time he had in that role against Scunthorpe convinces me of that. He created more chances in those few minutes than tevez has done all season.

Barry, started brightly but since the derby has completly faded. Is he as effectiv as De Jong? At the moment I dont think he is justifying his place.

RSC doesnt look fully fit to me & therefore I dont think he should be getting sniff near the 1st team yet. IF he is fully fit & is just rusty fair enough. We've paid well over the odds. If this is as good as he gets, then I think we need another forward.

Lescott is quickly becoming a boo boy on here. He is looking a bit lost but he may yet still come good. I think maybe he & Toure wil never become a good partnership as they are too similar. Maybe we need a big hard bastard in there to tell them what to do. Terry would have been ideal. Maybe Hangeleland would be a good option.

I think that Hughes is feircely loyal to his players, and I like that, but I think that over the past few games some of our other players have deserved a game. I think maybe MJ & Weiss have deserved a few run outs from the bench in particular

We have improved there is no doubt. The league position shows that, but I just worry that we have spent an awful lot of money & maybe will hve to spend more to get top 6 this year.

I'm begining to think that MH's players will end up getting him the chop in the summer
