Messi tomented the Aussies , never thought i would see him dominate a game again due to his age , but he was brilliant and it was a sight behold to see him taking on massed defences and tearing them to pieces.
His like will never be seen again , it would be a fitting end to his career to lift the World Cup but i dont think the Argies are quite good enough.

As a Australian we never realistically expected to beat them, most of us just hoped we'd show some fight and make them earn it and we did that and didn't disgrace ourselves. Sure they could've scored more late on, but they didn't and Kuol puts the late chance away who knows what would've happened. Can't help but think Behich could've gone down for a penalty shout but fair play to the lad for keeping his feet, almost scored one of the goals of the tournament.

For context football in Australia isn't a huge sport. It's barely supported by the government here in comparison to the other countries at the World Cup, it lags behind the AFL, NRL and rugby union here and is treated like shit in its coverage bar when we make the World Cup. The local A-League isn't the best standard, and fails to draw bumper crowds week in week out, but if we can grow the game out of what we achieved at this World Cup there's hope here.

It's been a great ride for us Australians, we gave Argentina a fight, and Messi had to play arguably his best game in his World Cup career to knock us out. I'm one very proud Australian after that.

Great post mate. You certainly didn't disgrace yourselves. As you said you almost got a worldie solo run and a big chance at the end. It really was margins at the end of the day, a mistake here, a big chance there etc. It would be nice if the government pumped more moolah into the game. They should take a leaf out of the MLS where it gets bigger every season and the quality has gone up nicely. You fancy the Argies to go all the way?

For us either the MLS or J-League and what the Japanese have done should be a guide for the future of football in my country. We chase the hit every 4 years of just qualifying for the World Cup and banking that. There is so much potential for the sport here, the Premier League is massive here, same as the World Cup and European football but the interest doesn't translate across to the local A-League for whatever reason. It's buried in a subscription stream service that is shoddy as, and doesn't get much main steam coverage, and it's not the highest quality, a lot of defensive football is played in it. The only time anyone really played attacking football was Postecoglou when he managed Brisbane to multiple titles, and you can see how he plays with Celtic. Plus the development pathways for kids here is disgraceful, but there is a lot of untapped talent that doesn't get a chance.

I think Argentina can go all the way, the best move they made was starting Alvarez instead of Martinez which has made them more dangerous. I think Brazil are still favorites for me, they have the best defence I think at the World Cup but all their injuries may end their hopes. England should come close surely and the Dutch look dangerous without getting any attention so far. I'm just not sure if Messi at 35 can carry Argentina past the better sides.

The problem I have is the studio panel afterwards raving about every touch as though it was some other worldly magic trick, even if it's just a simple pass. A "tap-in" goal was "world class", and so on. And let's be fair, with all due respect to Australia they're not Brazil, and it wasn't far away from going to penalties in the end.

I enjoy the world cup but all this constant drooling over certain players makes me want to throw up. And as I say, it's not like they've ever won it. I thought Alvarez has done better in his position than Messi has so far anyway. I'm not anti-Messi and have no doubts whatsoever about his brilliance, but it's almost telling that neither him nor Ronaldo have never won a world cup.
