…I am seeing him giving away the ball three times, one leading to a goal, the other two leading to good chances, whilst also being too tired to get in to positions to receive the ball and too slow to release.

So, I suppose you are right, I am looking at it very simply, and seeing that Messi specifically has not been playing well this half.
