Arise Sir Sol Campbell (P14)

Gary Mabbutt's got an MBE for 'services to football' and he got it in 1994 while he was still playing. So if that's the bar, I'd say Sol is hard done by.

It looks like you can't get above an OBE for 'services to football' without either winning the World Cup, being a legendary manager, or being a chairman. Any players with a CBE are almost always charity-related plus services to football.

Looking at some of the people with an MBE or OBE who got it just for football, and I'd say Sol Campbell wouldn't be out of place among them. Robbie Earle? Jonny Evans? Barry Ferguson? Steven Gerrard? Harry Kane? Gary McAllister? Stuart Pearce? David Seaman? But then so would a million other players, so I'm not sure how they decide it.
Confetti gongs.

Robbie Earle and Johnny Fucking Evans have a gong?
'For services to Northern Irish football' after winning 100 caps. Basically they've got to give him one otherwise they look biased towards the England national team. I'm waiting for the first player from Gibraltar to reach 100 caps.

God knows how Robbie Earle got one though.

Why should you get an 'honour' for being relatively good at your job?

He might have a case if he'd played for free all these years. The same applies to them all, not just him. Fucking Beckham thinks he deserves a knighthood, fuck knows why.

Because Beckham thinks he’s licked enough arse to get one and in that case, he probably deserves one… He’s the epitome of a media whore…. !

I'll always remember the look on his face when Rug Head dived at the Swamp and Mike Riley pointed to the spot. One of the most bent displays of refereeing in the PL era.
Reyes (RIP) got kicked out of the game. Camelgob blatantly took Ljungberg out when clean through (no foul), Ashley Cole had his knee studded by horseface right under the linesman's nose (no foul), the penalty was for no contact, Rooney & the Nevilles just ran around fouling with impunity, but apart from that it was a fair refereeing performance.
