Arsenal (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Well usually I'd say a draw at Arsenal is a very good result, especially with the way that they've been playing, but when you have held the lead until the 93rd minute you can only throw the points away by losing concentration, being unprofessional, and allowing your opponents a way back in .... and so this frustrating draw feels like a defeat, it still infuriates me that we couldn't manage to close the game down effectively.

We had all those defenders on the pitch in injury time and still Martinelli was faster and sharper than any of them on the one occasion that mattered ...... but there's little point in dwelling on it, we can't do anything about it now, we take a point, and we move on.

I broke my own rule by looking at the first fifteen pages of the post-match thread, expecting to see — not untrammelled praise, for sure not — but due respect for what was a cussed performance of a sort that we were not capable of turning in once all of last season. Some of the posts, I have to assume, were either posted by trolls, by infiltra(i)tors from other clubs posing as City fans, or simply by people who need help because they are miserable if City don't play all opposition off the park. They got right up my nose.
More fool me to have broken my rule.
How much does it need emphasising that we will have two obviously difficult away games this season, against the two likely pretenders to the PL crown? We have not suddenly turned into a Mourinho team, and it is a high probability — no, a certainty — that we will not play that way against anyone else in the PL, with the single possible exception of LFC.
How much does it need emphasising that we are in the middle of a major rebuild, that this is Pep.2, he's trying to set something up for before he leaves, but that it is only slowly falling into place? That in the mean time, we need to be a bit pragmatic.
How much does it need emphasising that we played an important European game on Thursday night, and that Arsenal benefitted from 48 hours more rest?

Finally, that we have Marmoush, Cherki and Ait Nouri, who have only just arrived, pretty much, out for apparently weeks, and that Khusa, one of our best defenders this season and arguably our key defender for forty-five minutes today, had to be subbed at half-time, presumably because of injury?

We couldn't hold out for the three points, and that's disappointing. We took one point, a draw away, at the ground of the most serious challengers to Liverpool — who up to now went head to head with them at Anfield, were amply deserving of a draw in that match, and have beaten or downright thumped everyone else.

Did you hear the way they roared at the end at the Emirates, as if they thought they'd actually won something?? That's who we are, that's how we live rent free in opposition fans' heads, when they think a draw at their own place against MCFC is some kind of victory…

We have Burnley and Brentford coming up. If we play the same way against them, I'll be the chief moaner on this forum.
But we won't.
You made my visit to this thread worthwhile.

Is Reijnders another who only looks good against lower half teams?
We had a couple of chances to increase our lead but we aren't clinical enough, and once Erling went off we'd lost our only realistic hope of a goal. Bernie ran his bits off but we needed ability on the ball as well as energy.
Sad to see Arsenal descending to the level of an upmarket Stoke, but so many teams now prefer strength and pace to skill on the ball.
Reijnders just needs to adjust as others do.

I still see this season as a transition, 3 quality players in and the obvious ones out and we are fine.

Looong week, 3 great results but honestly what the fuck was that, I’d seriously take the the two results and of gone out pointless today showing this league what we’re about and some thing more than park the bus. Again a great week just felt like I’d had a romantic weekend away and shot my load after 20 seconds then watched emmerdale on catch up

Who else is then? The league has never ever been done and dusted by the 3rd week in September - after only 5 games. There's gonna be injuries, suspensions and plenty of drama for all teams over the next 33 matches. That's one thing we can be sure of.
Just facts pal. Wish it was different.

Great post. Love this

Proud of the boys today. Several injuries to key players, 2 days less rest, not getting anything off yet another bellend ref, dead on our feet for the last 30 mins. We battled and never crumbled

Disappointing to concede so late but if they’d have scored with 10, 15, 20 minutes left they’d have almost certainly scored again

True, except that we wouldnt get 7 mins, more like three, and the ref would give em every 50/50.

Oh, and if we equalised like that var would check for that foul and disallow the goal.

Then post game sky would be carving us up for not winning, probably lauding arse for their persistence.

Anyway, I think we would have beaten us in that situation..........if that makes sense.

I think we clocked a total of SIXTEEN added mins between the two halves, probs at skys behest.

Time for a game clock methinks, play stops, clock stops, no need for added time.

They wont of course, as it removes some control of the game proceedings from pigmol and their bosses.

Sorry if Im ranting, just endured the longest 50 mins in footy history with no reward at the end of it.
The only thing I disagree with you there is that we DID get something from the game.

They made one mistake in 97 minutes against a top team and it took a worldy finish to beat them. To call it "unprofessional" is way out of order, more so to say you're "infuriated". Grow up.

Does that mean we're buying a right back in January or is Kush going there full time? No doubts about his ability but card- happy refs might be an issue.

How is anyone happy with that performance we got battered by arsenal the whole game and played like a Mourinho side. It showed just how far off challenging this current side is
I'm happy with that performance.
We are not a quadruple winning team, (at the moment) so why go to Arsenal and attempt to pass them off the park and get beat 5-1 like we did last season.
Had we lasted 5 more minutes and kept a clean sheet I'd be dancing like a dad dances at his daughters wedding.

Oh and this side is capable of challenging. Today showed that, we know our limits and play to our strengths.

Problem is, supporter wise, there been has and continues to be so much negativity. It is truly wearing.
Couldn't agree more.

This season (mostly), most of the CWC, and the later part of last season, it hasn't been justified for me, but a lot of the negative posters have been very quiet in the last few days (thankfully).

It was disappointing when they equalised today, but if that had been Nov/Dec 24/Jan/Feb 25 we'd have lost today, we've moved on from then, and I know we blew it at Brighton.

What is really encouraging at the moment, is the camaraderie in the team, and we've still got players missing.
