Of course it’s newsworthy. It’s space exploration with a view to broadening it.

Yes, but compared to actually landing on it, flying round it and taking a few pics isn't really a step forward, much less a giant leap

It’s not a great leap from previous visits.

But it is still fairly unproven technology (very different equipment/computers/software than 50 years ago) hence flying around the moon and back, to help iron out the kinks… before the big one of landing again.
