Needs to get back to his CP company and stone island gear.Frustrating performance, enough chances to win it by three or four. Also Pep was wearing a jacket which is never a good sign.
The glaring issue is that we are not quick. We do not attempt to press an advantage. Bernardo with his negative passing stops any thought of a counter. And its the same monotony - pass, pass, pass. Recycle the ball across the penalty box endlessly. Teams that deploy a low block - they will take that ALL day.I know everyone is angry, but…
We played well, controlled the game for the most part, rattled the woodwork twice, but are always susceptible to the fast break.
Moved the ball well, played at speed, but do not create nearly enough goalmouth chances for the level of possession and dominance.
Thought there were multiple excellent performances, but just couldn’t get that 3rd goal.
Players will be livid with the ref, and rightly so. Made it clear early on that he would be suckered by the kind of flopping he sees day in, day out in LaLiga, and in the end it decided the result.
Dier put his head down, Nico got the ball with the meat of his foot (no studs up), Dier didn’t get there, and then went down in stages to try to con the ref…and succeeded.
We have some shit refs in the PL, but there are some seriously shit refs in Europe and UEFA seems to love ‘em. Can’t touch a player without him flipping and refs fall for it every time!
Pissed off at the result, disappointed we couldn’t put the game to bed YET AGAIN, and the late twist against us is getting very, very old!
Donna saved us with the shot between O’Reilly’s legs, but powerless with the goals.
Stones doesn’t look fit, or has lost a step or three of pace. A presence on the ball but a liability on the ball in behind.
Hope Rodri is OK and just being managed.
Reijnders is an almost superstar, but…
Foden played very well without hitting the heights. Very unlucky with the shot against the underside of the bar.
Haaland scored two good goals, but should have scored that parry, too. Otherwise, anonymous.
Bernardo is excellent at keeping possession, but an anchor on the right wing, because he’s not kidding anyone that he’s going anywhere except backwards.
Doku bang average tonight, but doubled up constantly.
________
Nunes looks to have RB gig until Khusanov returns or Stones gets fit.
Nico did well again when he came on, even though people are split on the challenge. Rash in last minute, but Ref choked.
Savinho is kidding himself, but no-one else.
This guy is clearly a rag or dipper in disguiseImproved us from 2-1 to 2-2.
Anymore stats that "improved" the scoreline?
On the Ait Nouri vs O’Riley pace I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. As for Gvardiol, I don’t know what you’re expecting in terms of pace from a CB. I’d argue he’s as quick as Akanji or Ake who were our quickest CB’s of recent times. He’s quicker than Stones or Dias who both have been quality defenders for us in this system. It’s not a myth, he’s just not quick. Might look a bit quicker next to Dias! Alt Nouri is a brilliant footballer but very suspect defensively. One of the reasons is he’s not got good recovery pace. Over any kind of distance more than 15 yards O’Riley blitzes him. Not truro say he’s rapid either
Shades of last season where we couldn’t cope with athletic, aggressive midfield. They fully deserved their equaliser despite the actual pen being a bit dubious. No nous from us in that final 10, it was clear the third goal from us just wasn’t coming so why not just keep ball at their end, win some fouls (as a certain Grealish was so good at doing) and burn the clock. Instead we played into their hands making the game open.
When Ait-Nouri is back I’d love to see O’Reilly in midfield - would add some sorely missing backbone. Rodders a long way from his best and maybe we won’t see it til next season.
He can’t play Bernie in the middle unless it’s a double pivot cos he’s not got the legs anymore. If he wanted control he'd bench Reijnders who gives us no control whatsoever and plays Silva in midfield, at least in that case we can play Bobb or Sav or even Nunes on the right wing and have some attacking creativity, playing Silva on the wing is just inexplicable at this point.
Gvardiol's lack of pace was consistently exposed when he played full-backIt’s not a myth, he’s just not quick. Might look a bit quicker next to Dias! Alt Nouri is a brilliant footballer but very suspect defensively. One of the reasons is he’s not got good recovery pace. Over any kind of distance more than 15 yards O’Riley blitzes him. Not truro say he’s rapid either
We aren't blessed with the most attacking depth right now? They hit the bar twice, the reijnders chance came from a counter attack. I said we needed another goal, you would always hope to get another as 2-1 is a dangerous lead to have. However we aren’t blessed with the most attacking depth right now, do you want Pep to go out there and score the goal himself? I heard his back isn’t the best anymore
He doesn't have the legs period. He can’t play Bernie in the middle unless it’s a double pivot cos he’s not got the legs anymore.
I agree with you by the way, it’s not a good thing him out wide right. I just think this is how pep thinks.
In soccer, a raised foot near the head is a foul called "playing in a dangerous manner" or, more colloquially, a "high boot". A referee can call this foul even if no contact is made, as the action itself is a threat to a player's safety.
For those confused by the rules
Nico got the ball first and dier ducked his head into nicos trailing leg .. and don’t get me started on the free kick that led to this shambles?
he kicked him in head what would you want other way round
No surprise really. These are the sort of games I would of gone to in the past but city make it so hard to get tickets that I’ve virtually given up as everything is just too much hassle anymore from rip off Ryanair’s to getting hold of tickets to the general rip off prices for beer food hotels etc.Just back to the hotel.
What a weird fucking game. If we had pushed just that bit harder - could have killed the game, and I would have left Doku on - but then again, I don’t have a trophy cabinet like Pep.
More worryingly than issues on the pitch, was the utterly shocking away end!!!
I was embarrassed. I know it’s an expensive away game and a pint in Monaco is about €100, but it was a convention of tourists and the very best non-singers from the third tier of the Colin Bell and East Stand.
Half the away end was sitting down (I have the photos) and there were only a few pockets of singers - including the big Polish Blue bloke and an amazing young lad in a Goater shirt who tried to get the singing going for the entire game - I told him he was a superstar on the way out.
The guy in front of me had a Real Madrid Screensaver on his iPhone. At least the Chinese tourists I was chatting to tried to join in.
Seriously - worst away end in my 40+ years - tonight I saw a vision of the future of football - scary as fuck!
They actually won’t, because Monaco were exhausted at that point, especially when Nico G came on. We were dominating the game. Should’ve had 3 or 4. It’s easy to bring up negatives when you don’t win, if they played bad I’d be the first to be honest about it, but they didn’t, they controlled the game and the tempo like all Pep teams do, Monaco got lucky and that shit happens all the time in the CL, that’s why it’s so damn hard to win it.The glaring issue is that we are not quick. We do not attempt to press an advantage. Bernardo with his negative passing stops any thought of a counter. And its the same monotony - pass, pass, pass. Recycle the ball across the penalty box endlessly. Teams that deploy a low block - they will take that ALL day.
My only comment on the players is that Savinho has no business being on the left. We wasted points tonight.
Unfortunately referees are not refereeing but just give decisions to cheating rather than having the courage to recognise it for what it is and punishing it.The whole clear and obvious thing seems to be a bit of a myth at this point. It’s open season on re-refereeing the game now
