AS Monaco (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

No-one to blame but ourselves for that result. If we'd have taken one of our other chances that we had then we'd have won that game at a canter. We may have had plenty of control in that 2nd half but we did fuck all with it. Gone is the incisiveness we used to show. Monaco were there for the taking but instead we went for the death of a thousand cuts and just managed to stab ourselves. Passing the ball around without any purpose. We're acting like Gareth Taylor is in charge and playing in reverse.

Bernardo cannot be starting in games ahead of Bobb when the onus is on us to win the game. Start him against Liverpool Arsenal and another big game but not against teams we should be beating without much problem

If Nico had of positioned himself right, and gone to clear the ball with his head, a penalty wouldn't have been given .... even if he'd bashed heads with Dier as he cleared it.

But if you swing your boot high and wildly In a crowded penalty area, it's dangerous play, even if you connect with the ball ..... there was never a cat in hells chance that a penalty wasn't gonna be given, and especially as Dier was making the most of it.

He can’t just give him a free header.

He got the ball and Diers head collides with his leg.
Any other part of the body other than diers head and it’s a foul to us.

Reijnders created the most chances for us. He hit woodwork and ran his socks off 11.8 km covering the ground . Only Phil was better for us and was over 12 km. I'd rather him on the pitch than off it.

I don't think for a second that Gonzales had any control over what he did there, he just swung his foot high and hoped for the best, I don't even think he saw Dier ..... when any high cross is slung in the ball is there to be won, but you have to win it right, in a controlled fashion, and get the ball clear ..... Gonzales knew before he raised his boot that any misjudged contact with an opponent was almost certain to cost us, and I don't think there were many City fans or players who, after watching that incident, didn't fear the worst.
 
Having more possession than the other team is great if they are seriously trying to win it back all the time, because you're wearing them down. Under those circumstances, it's fair to say that you are genuinely controlling the game.

Nevertheless, so many on here seem oblivious to the fact that most sides are no longer trying to win the ball back from us, but are quite content to see us move it back and forth. They aren't expending much energy, but instead are prepared to wait for the likely chances that our soft underbelly will offer up.

This is not necessarily controlling the game.

Another way to interpret tonight's stats is this - that with around only 25 minutes or so of possession, they scored twice. (Istr Al-Hilal scoring their 4 with 32 minutes or so of the ball)

Possession isn't everything. It's what you do with it. Simply having the ball, these days is as meaningless as the number of passes, or the number of touches a certain player makes.

Did we learn nothing from last season's lack of intensity, or lost leads, during the group stage?

Because he just swung at it hopefully and the ball flew off his boot just before Dier collided with it ... Gonzales had no idea who was charging in to meet that cross, and he caught Dier .... it was not a controlled effort to clear the ball, more an extremely desperate one that didn't pay off.
 
Missed the last train to nice so stuck in Monaco until morning , sums up the this trip
 
Thought we played very well against a tough 5-4-1 in their own third with players who were up for it and were on it. Just dont think we got the rub of the green with a lot of little things and the obvious big things with the 2 shots that hit the woodwork and the penalty decision. Lots of positives for me and haaland will be up for Brentford by the looks of things. All but guranteed a goal on current form

I think a lot of signs are very good let's see how we respond on sunday

What do you think he should have done? He got the ball. “Win it right” — excellent, next time a defender clears the ball into row zed, I expect him to get a bollocking from you. About a half dozen times a match I reckon.

There are so many questioning his judgment. It was unlucky, not stupid, and bad judgment on the referee’s part, not Nico’s.

He said we had many chances- Phil in the first half and that many players played really good. We conceded few chances and created a lot considering its the CL and he's really pleased with our performance. There were many good things in this game.
He's saying nothing with regard to Spanish referees.
He thought that the game was close and at the end we did not defend the free kick well and then conceded the penalty so we take the point .

He got the fucking ball before the man. Dier headbutted his boot because he was late to the ball.

I thought reijnders had a very slow/anonymous first 25 then came into it big time. Still settling and not quite getting the rub of the green at the moment. Flashes of what's to come from him and foden - silk (and mobility)
 
No way Silva should have been in last season let alone this. Gives nothing except tidy little cameos to think we let Jack go but keep Bernado is a joke

I cannot wait til the poor guy just stands still next match, and whichever player then gets a free shot on net, and you praise Nico for not trying to clear it.

It’s just a ludicrous take.
