AS Monaco (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

No way Silva should have been in last season let alone this. Gives nothing except tidy little cameos to think we let Jack go but keep Bernado is a joke
And he stops Bobb from getting in. Play Bernardo in the big tight games Bobb every other time

Because he just swung at it hopefully and the ball flew off his boot just before Dier collided with it ... Gonzales had no idea who was charging in to meet that cross, and he caught Dier .... it was not a controlled effort to clear the ball, more an extremely desperate one that didn't pay off.
I cannot wait til the poor guy just stands still next match, and whichever player then gets a free shot on net, and you praise Nico for not trying to clear it.

It’s just a ludicrous take.

I don't think for a second that Gonzales had any control over what he did there, he just swung his foot high and hoped for the best, I don't even think he saw Dier ..... when any high cross is slung in the ball is there to be won, but you have to win it right, in a controlled fashion, and get the ball clear ..... Gonzales knew before he raised his boot that any misjudged contact with an opponent was almost certain to cost us, and I don't think there were many City fans or players who, after watching that incident, didn't fear the worst.
Nico fouled a Monaco player to give them a free kick before the penalty incident. The player was not going to get through our back line so I think Nico has to learn to let the player past him if he's been beaten and there's little chance of danger. He's a bit too rash at times.

I thought reijnders had a very slow/anonymous first 25 then came into it big time. Still settling and not quite getting the rub of the green at the moment. Flashes of what's to come from him and foden - silk (and mobility)
Couldn't agree more. He will be some player when he adjusts and settles. That's why Pep is happy with many players tonight.

I’ve only seen a still of the penalty. That’s a free kick anywhere else on the pitch so it is a penalty. I don’t think Nico could do much else it’s more a case of Dier winning the penalty than Nico giving it away. Dier was clever and knew what he was doing. Unfortunately for us it worked

Not withstanding how ineffective he was how the hell does Pep justify keeping Silva on the pitch in that second half I get saving Rodri and Stones but surely he isn’t letting Silva play out this game just because it’s Monaco
Oldest player on the pitch clearly past his best hopefully calling it a day soon and Pep doesn’t contemplate subbing him

Having more possession than the other team is great if they are seriously trying to win it back all the time, because you're wearing them down. Under those circumstances, it's fair to say that you are genuinely controlling the game.

Nevertheless, so many on here seem oblivious to the fact that most sides are no longer trying to win the ball back from us, but are quite content to see us move it back and forth. They aren't expending much energy, but instead are prepared to wait for the likely chances that our soft underbelly will offer up.

This is not necessarily controlling the game.

Another way to interpret tonight's stats is this - that with around only 25 minutes or so of possession, they scored twice. (Istr Al-Hilal scoring their 4 with 32 minutes or so of the ball)

Possession isn't everything. It's what you do with it. Simply having the ball, these days is as meaningless as the number of passes, or the number of touches a certain player makes.

Did we learn nothing from last season's lack of intensity, or lost leads, during the group stage?
Well we didn't defend and to be honest I thought we should have shut up shop at 86-87 mins. Might have got the win.

Away from home seven weeks. Watched it via a stream on a tiny unadjustable sized screen on my laptop- no sound. No way a pen - didn't think it was a free kick either. Decent performance generally I thought - felt like a loss. I think Brentford will be a similar game. We just need to be more clinical - goal machine Erling apart - he must be the most disappointed of all given his double.

In soccer, a raised foot near the head is a foul called "playing in a dangerous manner" or, more colloquially, a "high boot". A referee can call this foul even if no contact is made, as the action itself is a threat to a player's safety.

For those confused by the rules
So, pretty much every overhead kick then…

Know your history, Pingu, and you won’t sound quite so silly.
It was a tongue in cheek post but given your comment it’s probably worth saying that the term association football appeared in the earliest rules for the sport written in the 1860s. 20 years or so later some Oxford uni boys abbreviated association to soccer and so coined that term. So, yeah, football not soccer you silly billy!

Especially galling when KDB and Gundo are still tearing it up in the CL, he needs benched and used sparingly this season

Stupid decision for Nico to throw his leg that high in the box.

There's always a chance we are gonna concede a penalty there.
Ball was there to be won , what was he supposed to do ? He got the ball and didn’t touch that **** . clear as fuck on var screen but yeah cash app ref had to do his job worthy
