AS Monaco (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Good performance good result despite the insane protestations of the TNT sport mugs who talked as though we’d lost at home to Lithuania’s 3rd best team rather than got a decent point away to a decent team from a good league.

In patches today we were pinging it around in tight spaces like we did in our pomp. There was one instance where their right winger was feigning injury from a nothing challenge deep in our left back area but the ref waved play on and they pressed us like fuck spurred on by a sense of being wronged yet we one touch pinged it around them from player to player and found our way into acres of space.

Sounds to me a lot of people came to watch a football match for the first time. When the ball is at head height you must exercise carefulness. You leg should be absolutely clear from potentially collision with opponent’s head no matter what. It is called high boot and it is not a recent invention by EUFA. There is no argument about who touched the ball first in this situation.

He plays Bernardo as he feels he gives the team more control, and he has to do that because Bobb, sav, and Doku give you no control whatsoever. I’m not saying it’s the right approach, but he won’t play sav and Doku together as both are a liability in posesssion.

We just don’t have the right mix of wide options at the moment.
I'd never start savinho nor would I put him on over bobb but if this is the case then we will forever be worse going forward with bernardo right wing unless he has an overlapping full back.

Seems to me that unless Dier is motherfucking four foot two it’s not at “head height”, is it?

As I said to all the other referees here, you tell me what Nico is supposed to do here. You sure as hell better be applauding any City player that doesn’t make a challenge like that trying to poke the ball clear for the rest of your lives.

You want to call it terribly unlucky, fine. You want to blame Nico, then you’re making an inane argument.

Thank god for Haaland. But Bernardo Silva on our right wing. Bobb has to be a better option surely or even Savinho who did pretty well when he came on.

In soccer, a raised foot near the head is a foul called "playing in a dangerous manner" or, more colloquially, a "high boot". A referee can call this foul even if no contact is made, as the action itself is a threat to a player's safety.

For those confused by the rules
You must be American soccer

A high boot is an offense when it is executed in a dangerous manner, which includes
kicking the ball at or above waist height, potentially endangering an opponent's safety. And Dier’s head would meet the ball for a genuine attempt of header. Or did you mean it is a stretch to be called head kick in MMA?

Inane argument.
What people forget is that the referee *checks notes* didn't give it when he actually saw it live. And if the argument is that a high foot is a high foot, well it doesn't take 5 replays to see the height of his foot. The referee saw the height of the foot in real time and didn't deem it a high foot. He was only convinced after 3 minutes of Dier rolling around on the floor like he'd been shot, having a bunch of people in his ear, and watching a slow motion video that showed that Gonzalez got the ball.

Better chalk off half of Haalands goals then.

We could and should have scored 3-4 goals, but with so many players not as their peak 22-23 form, and others still adjusting to our style of play, there was always the fear that Monaco were still in the game.

Also, those substitutions were made with other games in mind, and it felt as though the replacements weren't at the same standard.

That's not a criticism of Pep,.but more a reflection of our lack of options until everyone is fit.

Two big games, Gonzales has come on and cost us, lost the ball against Arsenal leading to a goal and given away a penalty which was always going to be given, simply put he needs to do better, sounds harsh but decision making at the top level he has been found wanting, undoing all the good work

Because UEFA had instructed VAR to make sure we didn't win - and Nico's high foot gave them the ideal opportunity to.
The decision is annoying. But if you look at any UEFA match, fouls are constantly given for foot up that would not be given in England. It isn’t a conspiracy, it’s EUFA’s interpretations of the rules. The ref was crap throughput, but ultimately City’s wastefulness cost us the win.

just read Silva post match response to the match! This is the problem with Silva mentality “we were controlling the result” sorry only 1 goal lead you don’t control the result because you can’t this team can’t yet! Am fine with a 2 goal buffer to control the result but this controlling the result at just 1 goal up is negative football!

I don't think for a second that Gonzales had any control over what he did there, he just swung his foot high and hoped for the best, I don't even think he saw Dier ..... when any high cross is slung in the ball is there to be won, but you have to win it right, in a controlled fashion, and get the ball clear ..... Gonzales knew before he raised his boot that any misjudged contact with an opponent was almost certain to cost us, and I don't think there were many City fans or players who, after watching that incident, didn't fear the worst.
This, all day. If it was on Haaland we'd all want a pen, just sloppy and not good enough. Feel like its still better than last season, but nowhere near our usual standards. Maybe this is our new level and it's just going to take us quite a long time to get back to the top table, we will though, eventually!

The right side of the team is offering little in attack. Silva is not a winger and anything down the right is at walking pace. A late break last night with Silva on the ball came to nothing because of his lack of pace.
He needs to be in the middle of the park and we need a proper right winger
