So what should Nico have done last night?

Make no attempt for the ball, if he does that and they score he gets slagged off, he was right to go for it, actually touched the ball.

What was and iis wrong is that a ref can be so biased as to give the penalty, the game is being ruined by VAR. It was never needed.

We should have been out of site long before injury time. I was referring to poor game management/ not putting teams to bed which gives a ref the opportunity to influence the decision

But in answer to your question, if you raise your foot to head height you're taking a risk. I don't want to slag Nico off because he was genuinely unlucky
 
Very frustrating result. First half performance was really good, second half not so much. We really need Cherki and Marmoush back to have genuine game changing options from the bench. Stones didn't look great at right back. I thought Dias had a poor game. Josko a little bit too. Made building up a struggle - especially with Rodri still looking for fitness. Nico O'Reilly on the other hand was the best of the back 4 in every phase of play.

Foden was our best player along with Haaland. Him being properly and taking his game to a new level is great to see.

O'Reilly really is starting to show as one of our better players - not just 'good for a kid'

It'll be interesting to see how it goes for him in terms of England - it didn't take the Arsenal lad long to be called up and Nico certainly isn't worse than him

Hopefully he goes nowhere near the England set up until after the World Cup.

Sooooo in that moment, literally let the player head a shot at goal? He would get roasted for it.

He did the right thing. VAR (and only VAR) did the wrong thing

Trouble with a one goal lead is a single deflected shot, worldie or iffy decision (definitely 1, maybe 2 out of 3 last night) and you've lost your lead...

were an average run of the mill side as far the CL goes at the moment. Last 16 maybe but not that much different from last season.

Correct Ric, yes we should maybe have pushed more for a third, but we were comfortably seeing the game out then a ridiculous decision gives them a penalty.
 
As many have said, our passive possession based play in the second half suited Monaco. Their plan was clearly to sit deep, stay in the game and have a go towards the end, once we had run out of ideas.

I also have a major concern about our lack of concentration, sloppiness, carelessness (or whatever you want to call it) in the closing stages, leading to us conceding so often. It happened so many times last season and we’ve not learnt from it. Already this season we’ve conceded last minute goals against Brighton, Arsenal and now Monaco. So careless.
 
We got a coup;e of late goals v Burnley - whrn it didn't affect the result.

I'd like to see a stat comparing the very late goals we;ve conceded with the very late goals we've scored - say over the last couple of sesons or so - and how they have affected the result.

I'm too idle to try to work it out but I bet there's a hell of a difference. And it won't be to our advantage.

Spot on. The night before they got it right during the dippers game correctly pointing out a poor decision. Here they entered into that grey area that has sickened so many and is potentially ruining the game. They indulged in needless subjective analysis which offered an alternative view to the ref but not pointing out an obvious mistake. We perhaps need VAR just an awful lot less of it.

A perfect example of why one-goal leads are never comfortable.

Surely you've seen poor decisions before, or 35-yard wonder strikes, or freak deflections? If a team makes a conscious decision to protect a one-goal lead, only for one of the above to occur (against which you can definitely legislate, by attempting to stretch your lead) they've nobody else to blame.

Not everything is somebody else's fault.

No, read the rules book. If you do an overhead kick or bicycle kick with no opponents close enough to be hit its legal

Any raised leg that contacts an opponent in the face is an automatic foul. Dont understand why so many are pretending not to know this.

True. But for the infringement in question: "raised foot with contact" slowing down to ascertain contact was necessary. Besides at normal speed it looked like there was contact coz Dier jerked his head like he was shot or something. But the slowdown was realy to confirm he wasn't cheating us and buying the post event reaction by Dier.

He wasn't. It was a penalty.
 
I think the foul is a genuine grey area. Problem is on a forum is that people always want it to be black and white, Was/Was Not, purely binary.
I actually find that the decision making process is the wrong way round in this instance. I would actually have found it understandable if in real time the ref had awarded a penalty. If VAR then had the authority to call him to the monitor — but they don't, do they, in that scenario? — the proper function of VAR, in this instance would have been to get him to rescind his original decision. The slow motion makes it clear that a) he gets the ball b) barely brushes Dier. And the oblique angle between leg and head then makes the “dangerous play foot up” argument more than doubtful.
Look we should have put the game to bed before it even got to that. I hope everyone can agree on that. The major problem was there.
