I lnow little too nouthing about DIY

Bought a house last Month and been stripping the walls there in a bad state and the plaster is coming off the walls on some of them all the way back to the brick work

The plaster has the odd small hairs in it.

I done a bit of research on net and the hair could be anything from horse hair to asbestos

Am now shitting it

Any help advice thanks

Also any good places to get carpets / kitchens cheers

Is the wall hollow or solid when you knock it with your fist?

Also, I reckon there might just be someone who posts on here who can help you with the flooring. Can't quite remember his name though......
 
It's most likely to be horsehair which was used to reinforce lime plaster.
Make sure that you wear a mask as they sometimes put arsenic inthe mix to stop rats eating it, though I'm not sure if this is a bit of a tall story.

Try lighting it- don't know if it will try to support a flame because the hairs are small

Here's a tip pal, if you've more than about 3 1ft square places where it's falling off the wall don't try patching it, much easier to knock it all off and 'dot and dab' plasterboard drywall.

Then it's very unlikely to contain asbestos mate. It will probably be plastered brick. If it was hollow it could be asbestos insulation board but if it is solid then this is not likely. If you're concerned you can get a lab to test it. It'll cost you about £20. Google is your friend.

Foolishly, I broke up my old asbestos soil pipe and put it in the wheelie bin. It was painted though, so no bits came off and were breathed in.

I have a family member in hospital at the moment recovering from having a lung removed because of asbestos.

It's so much fun.

And i've had a family member die of it and that was their favourite joke.

Obviously when you emigrated you left your sense of humour back in blighty.

My old fella, who was only just 51 when he died of lung cancer, used to laugh at a similiar joke. As an ex footie player, he had a few problems with drink in later life, he joked with the doctors, that when he died and was cremated, due to the amount of booze he's consumed over the years, it would be better to have the fire brigade on standby.......

I don't think these have too much cause to concern. It's the same as asbestos sheds and roof tiles,these are cement which is vastly different from the lagging in minor doses.

True. Blue azzy is the really dangerous one. White isn't exactly harmless if you breathe in the dust but it's not as deadly as some suggest.

def not asbestos, will be horsehair and lime mortar, horrible stuff to use but the conservation pay well :-)))
 
I sit through asbestos awarness talks all the time in the work I do. The only thing you really need to know is that asbestos is only dangerous in dust form where you would have the chance of inhaling it. Large chunks are fine , but because of the stigma attached to it and the health and safety concerns it must be dealt with and disposed of by a professional.
I live about 1 1/2 miles from what was once the biggest asbestos factory in the world. Half the people I know worked for Turner Brothers Asbestos (TBA) at some time and none of them are remotely ill. However TBA is now only a small company due to the dangers. At one time every car in the world had brake pads made at TBA. It employed around 6000 people at one point.
Today it is basically a small unit making fire resistant products employing maybe 150. All the surrounding land that TBA owned is being sold off bit by bit.And they owned a lot.
A building company has been trying to build over 100 houses on ex TBA land for nearly 10 years now. . . The land they wanted to build on was used as a dump for excess and sub standard asbestos . . .The quote to dig it up and decontaminate the area was £14,000,000.
