Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post-Match Thread

I take it you mean Kyle. How bad is the injury? Does anyone know ?
Worrying signs with Walker this season. It does appear that he MAY have lost a yard of pace. And without that he is nowhere near good enough for our team. Hope that it isn't the case as he signed a long term contract last season I think.

I always fear the worst when the opposition get behind our flanks, especially as our full backs make no attempt to block the cross.
As ever, this will be more of a concern in the latter stages of the CL.
I genuinely thought Cancelo was awful defensively. I do wonder whether he would be better on his natural right side and Gomez could give us some pace and width on the left. Walker has started the season awfully.

What a strange point of view.

‘Gloss merchants’? We’ve won the league 4 times out of 5 seasons and are one of the greatest teams in the history of English football. Not only that but it’s our best start to a season since 2017. I thought we were as shit as anyone else yesterday but I also understand that bad days happens to every team, no matter the season. Just look at Liverpool, they’ve only won 2 matches and were extremely lucky to win one of them. I’d take our start in the league over any teams considering Arsenal haven’t had a tough fixture yet.
More eggshell.

I take it the gloss merchants will have been out by now. "Arrogant", "spoilt", "we'll still win the league", "could be an important point" etc Whilst the last 2 may hopefully have some validity - that was poor yesterday and showed a fragility we need to address.
If the last two points have validity, I don’t get your point? A lot of our fans now ARE arrogant. Successful teams all have this problem. Some of our fans have only treated success so ARE spoilt. Human nature I suppose. I don’t see it as being a gloss merchant to say we are ok and are going to win the league. Is obvious that should and will if we avoid long term injuries to our man players - although I’m aware that sounds arrogant haha

Fair result. A few average performances from us but good to see Haaland score and get two shots on target that MOTD ignored. Cancelo should have done better with their goal.
Cancelo had Bailey in his eyesight and should have sensed the danger. He was unmarked on the edge of the box.

We haven't got a fragility, the problem we have is we can't defend without the ball. The only fact on the table is Villa literally had one shot on target and they scored it. It was the same against Newcastle although they took the game to us at times and created far more chances so we conceded even more.

We seem to have this every year but it's a product of how we play and it can't be fixed. We aren't going to harden up at the back and change how we play with the risk of conceding 1 shot on target.

On another day we'd take our chances and batter Villa 3-1. 4-1 or 5-1. It's just the way it is and last year we finished top playing that way. This year if we draw a few of these type of games but win the rest then we'll win the league. I'd be more concerned if we were losing and playing badly but that isn't happening.

Poor decision making was accountable yesterday

Walker should have passed to Haaland
Stones should have headed back to Eddie
Mahrez should pass across the goal or put laces through it and not hesitate
Pep should have brought Alvarez on who shows more urgency than Mahrez

Still 1 point is better than 0

They both have a tendency to dawdle on the ball. We aren't very good at stopping crosses either, particularly on Cancelo's side.
Sometimes it looks like they want to show they can hang onto the ball, no matter who is trying to take it off them. Like, their ego kicks in. When an easy pass is on. It's frustrating.

Should have won. But then could have lost. That's the way it goes sometimes. Collectively we seemed a bit off it and yet we didn't do too much wrong, passing a tad sluggish ....it happens. Perspective is all, keep the longer term picture as to how we will perform - especially in a season like this with the World Cup in the middle. No doubt we'll be there come May.
