Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Personally I doubt any big money transfers in Jan, however wouldn't mind a couple of decent defenders on loan, even if it meant shipping out someone like Nunes. Any decent LB that allowed Josko to revert to his natural position at CB would do. Also, don't know if it's contractually possible, but why not recall Doyle and Perrone back into the men's squad. They are doing well with their loan clubs so calling them back could be tricky. Bobb is now scheduled early Feb, let's just hope he doesn't need too much time to get his mojo back. Horrible environment to throw academy lads into, but at least give OReilly a chance over Gundo. I know I'm pissing in the wind as if I'm talking to Pep but not sleeping great atm.

The only 2 that seemed to be actually trying was Foden and Lewis the rest seem to have given up.
It looks that way when you are slow , disorganized , unfit/ playing injured and know your time at the club is drawing near.

The lack of pace and physicality on and off the ball the ball and the consequential ease that the likes of Rogers was able to ease past and bully players with ball at toe is embarrassing to say the least.

The realization that we are a spent force is there for all to see , we might see a marginal improvement if all our squad had a decent run without some of them keeling over during games and during training week on week.

I doubt any of our central defenders will be fit to start against Everton so our line up will make for interesting reading.

It will be the lowest total by some margin we accrue come seasons end under Pep so get used to many more losses this season.

They haven't given up I would suggest more they know they are not good enough on mass anymore to compete in the league.

Pep is way off his game as well which doesn't help , he has no answers as to what to do to make us anything but easy fodder to beat.

From the Pep thread, post of the month.

Yes. The results and form are abysmal. Sometimes, we just need to step back a bit. Pep is definitely not above criticism. He's a stubborn SOB but I suppose he has every right to believe that his system, his methods and the way he wants to play is the correct one to perform at the highest level. After 8 years of playing his way, blowing it all up to play 2 banks of 4 and play on the counter isn't going to work. We just don't have the players to do that and we don't have time on the training pitch in between games to implement. Throwing the kids in at this time isn't right either, they need more protection. In hindsight he could've blooded more youngsters but I guess nobody could've anticpated these injuries.

We just have to ride this storm out, no matter how painful it is. We can all moan about his selections and tactics but at the minute his hands are greatly tied and we're having to make do with who is available.

A declining KDB and Rodri's injury has exposed this ageing squad and the amount of injuries has left it beyond threadbare. I think, the DOF and tehcnical team have tried to be too clever and attempted to get value for money with the recent signings. Kovacic, Nunes, Gundogan, Phillips, Savinho, Doku look to be poor signings at the moment. To be the best, we need to sign the best players.

Victory has defeated some of these players. They just don't give or can't find that extra 10% which is needed in most games. I can imagine that after 4 successive PLs, summoning that effort everytime must be difficult.

I have faith in Pep, his record is absurd and I trust things will improve soon

We need to go 442 to change the formula, shake things up we are too predictable all the teams have sussed us out and we are not gonna recover unless we change tactics, and Pep needs a younger number 2 to bring in fresh ideas.

I think you should add Akanje - he in particular put his shift in - and Ortega.
Lewis put a shift in but was still his very limited self, and - in a team that's performing so poorly - he is exposed as the lightweight that he is.
Bar those 4, the rest were clueless, unfit shite.
We used to be a well oiled machine that created chance after chance, we now look like Pep sends them out with a “do your best guys and remember to pass sideways and backwards till my eyes bleed “

From minute 2 to 45 we were the better team, playing the better football.

1 mistake,1 pass,1nil !!

If Josko had equalised with his header it wouldve been deserved.

Our stats were good,Villa couldnt get out but we didnt punish them from good shooting positions.

For the second half Dick changed things for vanilla but Pep didnt make the changes City needed.

Gundo shouldve been replaced by Jack with Dok or Sav playing left against a full back on a yellow card.

They started to over run us in midfield where Jack could've added pace, power and creativity ( remember notts forest 3 weeks ago).

Subs were needed

3 weak challenges preceeding their 2nd goal
He is championship quality at best. I could run around the pitch like a dog busting for a piss.
If we are relying on this lad to save our season we are well and truly fucked. He is weak in the tackle, doesn't make a killer pass and is tactically all over the place!!
We are NOT relying on this lad to “save our season” you fool.

Who else do you suggest should’ve played rb yesterday ??

The club should have it enough about it see there was a player there and kept hold of him.

Same goes for Palmer, Lavia, THB.

Whoever is making these mental decisions wants fucking off.
Keep them for a rainy day 2 or 3 seasons down the line?

Madness this.

Not one person was crying out for any of the above to play weekly instead of the regulars until this season when they’re now out of form.

And no one even asks if those above would be willing to sit in the under 23’s etc for 2 or 3 seasons waiting on their chance.

Hindsight is such a wonderful thing. And bollocks.

I find it so daft that fans are arguing against the need for Pep to change things & be pragmatic with his strategy, selection & tactics based on the players available. I don't think that Pep needs to go or to change his principles indefinitely, but to think he should persist as is, with the same players unable to play as he wants is absurd. He should adapt & change how we play, change the personnel, to make us harder to beat, UNTIL HE GETS THE PLAYERS AVAILABLE TO EFFECTIVELY PLAY HOW HE WANTS. Whether that be through injury recovery or the transfer windows, it doesn't matter - the current, available, squad aren't able to play how he wants and get results, so he should change how we play.
A rebuild, refit and refresh at every level of the football department.

** First post continued -:

....3 weak challenges preceding their 2nd goal when the sub changes should have already been made at least 15 minutes earlier ,if not at half time !!

2 - nil had been coming and we didnt do amything about it.

When the subs were eventually made late in the game, we did create and threaten more than at anytime in the previous 35 minutes.

Imo, very disappointing game management.

Onwards and upwards....or downwards and remember

" City are back,City are back" &

"We never win at home and we never win away".

I don’t think we were the better team at any point as we carried no threat. Agree Gvardiol should score but beyond that we didn’t look like scoring. Villa were comfortable at every stage of the game and could’ve scored more but for Ortega. They won every tackle that mattered. We are so easy to play against it’s scary.

Maybe a sabatica,l followed by being our global ambassador or building Girona up to challenge Barca & Mad Rid

You legacy at City will certainly never be surpassed !!

Totally agree mate, get back to basics. Quite simply, don't concede a goal for a start. If you don't concede you have a chance of winning the game and have something to build on. We can't keep playing in a way which almost guarantees the opposition - whoever they are - simple chances in every game.

I honestly think that some managers know how we're going to play and they've all pretty much cracked it. Against Everton, sit deeper, protect the back 4 and take it from there and lets' start to play for 1-0 wins. I know it won't be pretty but if you play like that, you will build and learn how to grind wins out and when we get back on form we will be able to go to the likes of Real/PSG etc and grind.
I'd say all managers know how we are going to play as we have been playing this way for a number of seasons. Sadly aren't able to carry out the plan anymore, it's not working with the current state of the personnel we have.

Went yesterday my first away game of the season. Great day out drinking but paying the price this morning. Couldn't believe how much moaning and insults directed at the players and Pep there were. It's only a few months ago they were lifting the PL trophy for the 4th consecutive season. Please remember that.
Also singing "we're fcking shit" is insulting to these players and manager who've won everything at City.
Rant over now where's those paracetamol
