Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Our only win in 12 was when Grealish played in the middle.

I don't get why he hasn't played there agsin since the Forest game. I just don't get it worked than, than next game Grealish was dropped or injured. But my point is it work when has he played there again. It's fucking baffling
He played in the middle versus Juventus and did nothing.

When we were very good (which wasn't that long ago!) teams either worked us out, or accidently had an answer for us through fear and lack of choice to play any other way. Our only option was to go all out attack which left us vulnerable on the counter but our attack would often be so relentless it didn't matter. The possession was our defence at times.

So teams sat back, learned from Arsenals low block and now there was no attack and the possession didn't help in defence as they weren't even trying to counter. It became boring, pass to the side, possession no threat. This meant we lost our threat and confidence as we now feared the counter much more as we can't score.

Add injuries into that and players like Haaland having no chances against all the teams who play this way and the counter became easier again. By this point our team were bereft of answers and didn't know how to defend/had injury issues in defence.

Loss after loss came and more injuries and now here we are. Stuck for an answer. Trying the same thing that doesn't work.

A lower table side goes back to basics and works on the defence, forcing teams to attack, then building from there. Top 4 teams often aren't allowed that 'luxury' as they can't afford draws. But I think we're now at the stage were a draw would be acceptable so it's time to go back to basics and sort the defence out instead of playing like a fully fit team fighting for top 2.

Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, speaking to TNT Sports: "We knew it was going to be difficult. They have not had results, but we knew they were going to come firing.

"We knew we needed a reaction in the same way as they did.

"To a man I thought we were outstanding and I think we deserved the win.

"I try to thrive in big games and I want to show what I am about - it is nice to perform in the big games.

"Sometimes I will do the hard bit and then struggle to find that bit of quality and have that composure.

"This season I have squandered a few chances that I would have liked to score."

On Man City: "It felt tougher than it probably looked. They make you work and it is so demanding out of possession.

"We knew we had to be on it from start to finish. On the counter-attack we were good and that's probably why we won the game."

I am normally so cool and backing the club and manager on here through thick and thin, But I have had enough
BIG SHOUT to the fans today, Loud and Proud and got right behind the team and still sing their hearts out

I hate watching players ghosting at any level and let's get it right here highly paid players at the best club in the past 10 years, World-Class players ghosting in a city shirt does not sit well with me

Got to agree. I know confidence is rock bottom, but these are talented players going through the motions. Average players skipping through 3 or 4 of our lads who seem to have forgotten how to tackle and win the ball back!

Also agree with the away fans shout. Loud and proud.

He played in the middle versus Juventus and did nothing.
At least he created a big chance to Bernado and did not let Juve players walk around him. That is more than current Gundo offers in the past 2 weeks

Sad but that is the reality

I would not mind play kids in the midfield now

Defence woeful.

Attack dismal.

Midfield invisible.

So overall much better than expected.
And yet we only lost 2-1 with Foden getting that last minute consolation where apparantely it looked like the players have completely threw in the towel.

Grealish doesn’t offer anything, as much as a nice Guy around the club and off the pitch he offers absolutely nothing , the fact he hasn’t scored a goal for a whole calendar month is frankly shocking , either play him through the middle Pep or get rid.
Calendar year?

It’s the one time in a blue moon that Pep changes at HT, and he brings on Kyle Walker while we’re down 1-0… To the surprise of no one, except apparently Pep, he was once again a trainwreck and at the crime scene for their second goal, which put the game to rest. I just don’t get it. He’s been a disaster defensively for two years and gives us nothing from an attacking standpoint, either. Playing him at this point would be a fireable offense for anyone not named Pep Guardiola; he’s lost the plot and has no idea how to get us out of this hole(more like a bottomless pit). Getting in the top four at this point would require a minor miracle.
Avoiding relegation is my immediate concern!

The Boys in Blue did give in. I can say no more about that, sorry.
However the fans in Blue did not give in they supported until the bitter end. Thank you fans, thank you.

I shall now retire and just ponder on what has happened.
I will not though condemn the team or Pep. To me they have still got a lot left in the bank from the past few years.
They are City as I am City.
We’ll be back soon. :-)

John Boy I am sorry you are injured again. I’m still on your side though. :-)
Well put. We may be at the end of a fabulous era but there is no need to give abuse to our players like some do on here. Once a blue always a blue no matter what happens.
