Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

That was a really good goal we scored. Savinho running at the opposition, taking on 2 or 3 players, Foden not giving up after his first shot was blocked. It takes fight to score goals and win games and that is what we are lacking.
Was pleased for Phil.

Our play after that though, yes I know it was only a minute and a half but a shit free kick and no urgency to get it forward.

I always wonder if players actually know how long is left when they seem to be pissing about when a goal is needed?

The problem with your example is that Walker has been dogshit for weeks and Barnardo has been putting fires out all over the place.

Hardly surprising that he's thinking about providing cover to a player thats been all over the place for weeks.

Bottom line is that everyone has to be at a proper level, or the whole system breaks down.
But we have hardly any players "at a proper level" at the moment so we need to review the system we play.

100%.

City fans are at our best in periods of adversity.

We fight to the end.
I'll be there on Boxing Day 100% behind the team and 100% behind Pep, no matter what happens when it's 'game on' we the fans have to do our job, from now on every point counts.

What's frustrating to me is that Pep is persisting with the same players who are letting him down. Walker, Lewis, Bernardo and Gundogan have been so below par yet they're playing whenever available. Playing Bernardo wide right means we have zero threat. Gundogan can't even run faster than a jog and the less said about Walker and Lewis the better.

I don't understand why Pep is continuing to persist when they're not going to magically flick a switch and turn it around. The results are not getting better so you may as well use the likes of Wright, O'Reilly etc. If you lose games playing some youngsters it's at least better than persisting with guys that are clearly done.
Thanks City_Sean, excellent post. You have named the very players (though not Bernie) who have consistently underperformed recently yet Pep keeps trusting them even when he has better options on the bench. Team selection plus not bringing subs on earlier is as much the problem as injuries. Game management issues suddenly. Your point about Bernie is good but why oh why was Jack put back on the wing (and benched) after a MOTM performance in central midfield against Forest? We finally saw the best of Jack ... with KDB, alongside him, also shining, in our only win recently. Pep still has the tools within our current squad to get better results and get top 4 - provided he stops trying to find the right position for the ever-willing Rico and stops playing Gundo at all costs. Then the major overhaul (starting in January) can begin. Happy Christmas everyone!

Mental not having a full squad.

Worked in the past but not now all this working with a smaller squad.

The premier league is not la liga.
It's not the bundesliga.

You need a full 25.

Teams have caught up tactically and we have no competition for player places.

What we do have ( fuck injures) is a team coasting. Taking the piss.

Feel sorry for pep for the most part because he can't do fuck all when the 11 cross the white line , but he's not helping himself having a small squad not competing with each other in the hardest league in the world.
If you want standard, straightforward ideas you don't hire a counter intuitive genius - tactics, team selection, squad size the lot - who has delivered non-stop results in his coaching career. Yes the page is turning on some stellar careers and we'll rebuild, but we're talking about the first bad run in over eight years. I listen to the varying opinions of the fans near me, I read the opinions of the fans online, but our trophy winning genius coach does not, IN MY OPINION need advice from those random fans - albeit everyone has an opinion.

I don't think they knew their best team/tactics at the time but they do know.

Not that long before we play them at home, we'll need a huge improvement in form if we are to get a result.
You're making excuses for Chelsea when we beat them at their place - they don't have any excuses - they added a billion pounds worth of talent to a multi-billion pound squad. Chelsea lost at home today. against Fulham. Do you have any more excuses for them?

So if City have a big rebuild in the summer and bring in 5 or 6 new players, the team should be judged on their first match, and can't be expected to get better as a team the more they play, train and get used to a managers tactics together?

If you honestly think a new manager is going to have got his ideas fully across by the first game of the season then I don't know what to say.
