Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Savinho created pretty much everything we threw at them whilst he was on he was also very unlucky not to score ffs. Bobb was much worse.
True, but also a sad reflection of where we are that the relatively mediocre chances that Savinho created were the best we managed. I think he cut it back behind the onrushing players about 3 times in the first half.

With Marmoush back and Cherki to add creativity and goal scoring potential that could help others (see: Foden) as well because we lack verve in this regard with consistency.

Season is long and whilst Arsenal are favourites, we could find it within to mount a challenge, but we can't fall too far behind.

Prem is tougher than ever and distance between top sides and the rest is also smaller.

Data trends have shown how difficult it has become to control games as we have in the past.

Even Arsenal as the "best" defensive side, are more vulnerable each season to conceding.

The one Villa socred was a wonder strike from wonder play overall, but finding consistent success for top sides via the past methods for attack to "dominate" with the difficulty that's there scoring against and risks for conceding that come from "fast breaks" against the current meta of coaching and quality of player the rest of the league possesses is a big question mark.

Can any top side really dominate?

Liverpool and Chelsea's inconsistency and ours isn't a coincidence given "all the money spent" on talent.

Hard to see this in the near future from what I can tell.

Very disappointed in Bobb , he doesn’t look strong enough against a physical team like Villa.

Onana showed Dias how to bravely defend a shot in the box, not turning your back on it.

Savinho very unlucky when Torres luckily deflected his shot over the bar.

Midfield was way too light with Stones trying to support Reinders . Why was Bernardo the furthest forward

He is the worst. Been calling it for months now. He wasn't even good against Villareal, his assist was to the smallest person on the pitch, says more about Villareal. Absolutely fuming what a shit game. Like someone said who ever didn't accept 70m for him needs the boot.
Non asissting, non scoring wide player

Very lightweight and outdone by Villa’s snidely midfield - which that Geordie **** refereeing was all too happy to oblige. We were again, too slow, too many touches and not enough forward passing.

We are not a team of supermen who are not only phenomenally skillful but run faster, try harder are tougher than the opposition.

We lose too many physical battles.

Not good enough. Started well, but fizzled out and then moved between average and shite. Not as painful as previous seasons, but I think this Villa is a good measure to see where the team is at and we have failed it miserably.

Just a flashback to last season: the team doesn't function without a defensive mid. I'd prefer to start with Nico G on the pitch and bring him off, if he's fit enough.

Reijnders and Foden well off it. Sav and Bobb no end product. Haaland back to drifting through games and missing the once chance he had.

If we aren't careful we could be out of the title race before December.

Pep made a big deal about last season’s display here being toothless and how we are a ‘changed team’ compared to that version.

Not based on that we’re not.

Rubbish. Boring. No urgency or fast tempo to our game whatsoever.

I’m fed up of aimlessly crossing the ball too. We get into good areas then just put our head down and cross to nobody. O’Reilly is the only one who looks up most of the time. It’s just shit.

But his tactics were criminally bad from the start and he should be held accountable for them. No midfield against one of the most combative teams in the league.

Not only that, Reijnders as one of the few we had in midfield who doesn’t have a defensive bone in his body. Suicidal from Pep.

Bernie stealing an absolute living I’m sorry to say. But gets picked religiously. Reminds me of Walker last season it’s that bad.

A tough place to go but we made it even tougher by playing absolutely shit and into their hands.

Villa played like they meant it, like they wanted it and we played with the arrogance our last 18 months don’t warrant us having.

Just poor all round. Ultimately on Pep IMO.
I think you're underestimating how difficult it is to break down a side like Villa who have a 1-0 lead. We weren't up to it though. I am not sure there are many sides in Europe who could do it.

First half midfield selection lost that for us today. Nico has the fire in midfield to play against that Villa midfield and we were better when he came on.

Can we see Cherki from the start please Pep?
People are pinning their hopes on him and of course he could change things..he has the talent....but Pep clearly (by not starting him today for instance) is worried about something.....Im not sure Cherki is suited when we are a team that is easy to transition against....he would be lost and we would be a man down in the middle of the park. He needs to be bedded in slowly as you need to have the DM position and 8 position sorted (and Reijnders is playing poorly at present.

The only realistic option for him to start at the moment is for him to play wide right - im sure he could but at the same time Im also sure he is probably way more effective centrally.

Can we just say this loud and clear - Savinho is suspect. But on the left, he is useless. Having him on the left with Bobb on he right - DOES.NOT.WORK. And putting Marmoush on with 10 minutes left is pointless. Why is Cherki and Marmoush not into the game sooner? We had three subs made and two were defensive minded. Why you don't bring on Cherki and Marmoush is beyond me.
Saw hope against arse that he'd change his ways.

But no. Still fannying about with 10 minutes to go while they have 10 men back. Then forced to take potshots. Nevermind corners, just take them short, it's a waste of time.
