Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Most annoying bit is that we were OK defensively and were undone by a good goal/timid and poor defending at a set piece.

It’s the attack where we struggled and it stems from being slow on the ball. No urgency or runners from deep. We got that when Doku/NOR came on and got in behind a couple of times but they were very few and far in between.

People can completely ignore the blatantly obvious issues that we have all they like, the truth hurts.

The truth is we are a bang average football team. We've been shit since Spurs at home, yes we've won games but far from convincing performances and lucky to get certain wins along the way.

That today was the same old story from last season to this season, nothings changed.

Our wingers are absolutely terrible, our midfield without Rodri is bang average, Donnarumma saved us alot over recent weeks papering over the defensive issues.

No balance to the side whatsoever. Pep fucked up big time today too there's no hiding it.
agree with all of that except the Pep bit....

I think again like last season he knows we arent strong enough....

I said during the summer that we had too many average players...issues at fullack, CDM and wingers....got roundly jumped on by some regulars on here.....but here we are....Like you say, we got away with it over the last few weeks playing some bang average teams and gettting results...but against the better teams we will struggle and that list of better teams is growing

Why pick an individual out from today’s game? Not a single player played well at all.

You stand out even more in a shit game, Savinho is not good enough, Pep and City have not got time for him to develop into this so-called superstar player Pep thinks he can be

Folks will whinge and there’s is no doubt games like this show our lack of pace and strength but in truth it was a game of few shots on target, with one decent one for them that went in and one from City cleared of the line plus a City goal disallowed for one of those offsides that shouldn’t be.

City had double the number of shots Villa did and one more on target.

Villa had to defend for lives and did; annoying.

Shame Pep didn’t start with a different side but assume he had to protect Nico G.

Savinho will get criticism, rightly, for not doing better with his crosses, which were frustrating, but he actually did quite a bit of decent work, including our best strike on goal.

Ultimately the result is far worse than the performance but it does highlight where improvement is required. I think we will continue to improve but not not enough to win the league this season and we still need to spend more money to complete our transition.
Double the number of shots trophy coming our way! Get the route lined up. ;)

It’s difficult to get angry when you didn’t feel we were anywhere near good enough to challenge for the title anyway. It’s just another expected performance from a team consisting of numerous players that aren’t good enough. Until the club act serious again, I’ll probably continue to find myself feeling indifferent after defeats. Savinho, Doku and Bobb as our wingers in 2025 is not serious. Nunes as our right back in 2025 is not serious. Bernardo still in our starting line up in 2025 is not serious. So losing away to Villa? Well yeah, I’m not surprised.

Have to admit I am getting concerned about Bobb. He was flying until he broke his leg and has had one good game (against Wolves) since. His decision making has been poor, he hasn’t created chances or been a goal threat. He presses well but he’s not quick enough to make runs in behind.

We played chess whilst Villa just sat back and played it simple .its fucking boring to be honest .Earlier in the season we played more direct and it was exciting to watch .The possession based shit has been found out .
Pep terrible team
Selection
A last season Groundhog Day, Pep culpable

Team in transition after long unbeaten run loses narrowly at a tough away ground.

Under Mancini at the start of his career with us this type of result would happen.

Disappointing day but a long season ahead.

Too many players who can probably boss it in the Champions League on the regular, but are too soft for the Premier League

Silva is like dragging an anchor round the midfield...even if the ball is going forward, he'll find a backwards pass. I really don't see what it is about him...
Bobb contributed absolutely FA, as did Savinho. Rjeinders needs a foot up his arse as well. I'd like to see O'Reilly given a go at no.6, he's a big lad, likes a header or a tackle and has pace, I'm just not sure about whether he reads the game like Rodri, or whether he ever could. Cherki needs more than 10 minutes,, as does Marmoush...we need a refresh, so start them?

First half midfield selection lost that for us today. Nico has the fire in midfield to play against that Villa midfield and we were better when he came on.

Can we see Cherki from the start please Pep?
I really don't see Cherki getting a start just in case he does something unexpected.
