Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Started off well, but sloppy in the final third. Need to score when on top in games like that, because it's never going to last all game.
Yes good start. Passing and movement was slick but didn’t create anything. Slowly Villa grabbed the game and the crowd got behind them. Disappointing to see us bullied.

Im with you, we arent strong enough, but to start rudolph/Silva/Foden central was criminal. Even with the injuries

As for Savinho, its getting embarrassing now. Bobb should be 4th choice getting some minutes. Not starting a tuff away game. We need 2 top level wingers, end of
who else could he have played there though?

Kova and Nico clearly were not fit enough....IM also not sure Kov adds or changes that performance (Nico did when he came on tbf)

Yeah I know what you mean, just my frustration boiling over and coming out.
No bother bud, I hate when we get beat especially when you have a feeling it could have been better.

Better days ahead hopefully - fingers crossed for starting game time for Ait-Nouri, Cherki, Marmoush and Khusanov against Swansea and get some momentum going again.

oh look, spurs just scored from a corner, Arsenal win again from a set piece, Dippers score plenty from them, why is no one inside our club concerned that ours are awful and we are missing a huge opportunity to get anything from them.
We're only allowed to score after a 300 pass move.

Squad isn’t bad, unfortunately this is the cost of rotation. The team had good momentum with a stable XI but we will eventually need to make rotations and other players will need to step up.

I think this is a reality check for some who thought we could win the league. This is a huge improvement on last season, but we’re still way off at the level we need to be. It’s important to stay calm and just hope for consistency from the team.

Bernardo and Stones showed their age today and also highlighted why the rebuild is still ongoing. Both won’t be here in the summer. Both had a couple nice moments like that through ball but ultimately also showed why we’ve looked better without either.

As for Savio and Bobb. Really poor and ineffective. I like both, but moments of magic can only take you so far at the top level. You need quality and consistency. Not seen that from either this season. Question marks on their quality is valid. Doku looked sharp after coming on.

Upwards and onwards. I don’t expect much in the league. Top 4 should be comfortable. New faces still need to gel with the team. Cherki especially. But this is just where we are as a team. The lesson today: still a work in progress.

We are so slow moving the ball forward that it is really easy to defend against.
Its our Achilles heel.

We can't break teams down as easily as we used to.

So let's play walking football and let them get 11 behind the ball, all camped out on the 18 yard box waiting for the inevitable turnover and quick counter. Against our CBs who turn and accelerate like an ocean liner.

Barca are playing teenagers and Eric Garcia at CB and still the same process regardless. We have players who can move the ball quicker, they just choose not to.
We have too many players passing the ball so they can pass on the responsibility, doing that quicker won’t help, they need to take responsibility, pass with purpose and when possible with progression in mind.

Nah mate, it was a corner.
So I’ve heard, I nipped out the room at that point and saw Nunes disputing it strongly.

Also I read a good few on the match day thread (I know, I know) saying it shouldn’t have been so assumed it had been a harsh one on us.

It's really tough to watch a film over and over again when you know exactly how it ends :(

With our midfield at present without Rodri and today without Gonzales, no way we should be starting Bobb AND Savinho in same team and even Doku.. too fucking lightweight and no end product!!

Marmoush and Cherki in ahead of them from now

Credit to Villa for a deserved win today.
I thought Pep got his starting selection wrong today, but I don't know how much of the game Gonzalez could have played if he were selected.
We didn't create enough chances to win the game, and Villa were very, very resolute.
We are not yet where we would like to be, but I am pleased with the improvements we have made.
It just shows how tough the PL is as this moment - good players and good coaches.
As always when we drop a point, a lot of the forum wade in to the same players who have achieved more points than any PL team since April. We are not good enough to win every game we play - YET.

I haven't listened to Sky's commentary for some time: I am away for the weekend so watched in a hotel bar and lord above it is bad. It is fantastic for me to see Bournemouth and Sunderland in the top 4; it is the stuff of dreams.
