Aston Villa (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

We love Unai but he got it wrong last night. We needed to win but sat back and came for a draw.We know Roger’s on the right dosn’t work and should have been subbed much earlier , Disasi is not a right back once he came on we were in trouble , same as PSG away. Realistically I think that’s champs league over for us now , hope it dosnt effect us for FA cup semi against Palace as these are another team that have had our number recently.

Villa must not sign Rashford !! He'll weaken you and strengthen united.

Agree 100 pc. Villa were over-cautious and that made it easier for us. A total contrast to the match at Villa Park.

I cannot wax more lyrical about Nico O'Reilly.

19 years old...I repeat 19 years old.

Of course he isn't the first at this age, but to come into a team like City, with very little involvement previously and play like a seasoned pro is just astonishing.

Most get blooded against 'lesser' teams over a couple of seasons, but this lad has come straight into the Premier League and on top of that, he is playing out of position.

Who's to say he won't be converted to full-back. He seriously needs to consider it.

Speaks volumes for our incredible Academy.

BTW, five ex-Academy players on the pitch/bench last night.
Add on the fact that he has come in to play left back in our worse season form wise and is a main part of our good run of results.

Why the fuck was Dick playing for a draw?

In order to claim a Champions League spot, Villa needed the win more than we did, so why have Martinez waste time like he did?

The Brummie twats got exactly what they deserved; fuck all!
I saw it another way,I thought we completely contained them and they couldn’t get going all night. Our press was magnificent and stunted their buildup

Another Pep masterclass for me

Agree on Martinez , he’s a cock and he just can’t help himself

Wowwww! City win it in injury-time.

Plenty of fans missed that winner, they'd already left to beat the traffic.

Fuck off you rag loving ****.

I had a read of the BBC coverage at half time and noticed that every comment they’d published in their feed was from a Villa fan - incredibly one sided with Stones bitter bile waving it together. The BBCs coverage of City is no better than the Liverpool Echo.

Couple of really important results for us at Goodison and again last night. Keeps momentum with us in the league and a great boost for Sunday.
Strangely negative approach from Villa, six across the back on many occasions. You can argue about their penalty all night but, imo, PGMOL can’t justifiably call it a clear and obvious error which I appreciate, given the standard of Pawsons overall performance, is somewhat ironic. Great to see Doku and Nunes (not as easy as it looked that finish) combine to give us the 3 points I thought we deserved and great to see Bernardo back to his best.

Some saying the performance wasn't that good!? Sorry it's what pep wants total control 60+ possession stats never over commit no risky passes it's his base that won us the treble! I was saying a lot of fans were saying Newcastle were going rip us apart Villa was going to rip us apart essentially when you watched there last game against Newcastle how good they've been with on of the best midfield in the league!

I'll keep saying his Pep's philosophy of control possession is the best way to defend and win games win trophies , it's why we been the best team in the premier league for the last 8/10 years!

Personally hope Pep stays for another 10 years because when we get a new manager it might be more end to end but we will not win as many titles trophies as under pep..
Absolutely spot on

I’ve been hearing on here that football has changed and that Pep has been left behind by these quick transition teams

He’s knocked that theory into a cocked hat , Bournemouth , Palace and now Villa all dominated by Pep’s out of date tactics

I thought the result was magnificent but the performance still way below our standards. Was a frustrating watch and for large parts O'Reilly was the only threat going forward. Marmoush the only other player that dares to look forward.

KDB thinks he still has it.. he clearly doesn't. Bernardo.. can't ever question the effort but he's never going to provide chances.
Kovacic - tries but he's too slow and on a few occasions lost the ball in stupid places setting off counters.
Gundogan..other than clocking Martinez which I'm grateful for hardly noticed he was playing.
Mcatee. Nice touch and composure and a good free kick. He might be a player long term IF he's got runners around him.
And the match winner.. Great run for the goal but the rest of the match was his usual..

I genuinely think Villa picked the wrong starting line up..Ascension/Watkins starting might have been more effective in holding onto the ball more. Impressed by that Kamara player though..works well in right space.

Martinez glum chops at the end was a sight to behold.
Cheer up! We won ffs

Sweet as nectar. There is a gobby Villa fan at my work who was going on about their unbeaten run for the past week. He is going to be mocked tomorrow - Villa were very poor. In a false position with only +5 goal difference. Hope they sign that bell-end because he will drag them down like he did with the rags.

Martinez was at it as usual and Morgan Rogers was moaning like a child from start to finish… him and Tielemans were in the ref’s ear for the whole game.

They are trying to get him sold for their mates the scum.

Rashford and his crew clearly have influence, none stop media coverage, bang average performances being talked up as “electric “ and “world class”, played 3 games between October and February but starts for England, Ollie Watkins frozen out and last night Rashford took every free kick and corner that Villa were awarded. And he’s now penalty taker too. Anyone would think he could play?

Fair enough, that's your view and I don't have a problem with it.

I just can't understand from my perspective why anyone would leave a game early when it's not over until it's over.

We've had some tremendous moments over the last few years, the Ageuro goal being just one example, and tonight being another.

It's their chioce to leave the ground, but for the life of me I can't understand why, given our history of last minute goals over the years, including the game against Gillingham, anyone would want to miss those moments for the sake of 'getting away early', especially these days when it costs an arm and a leg to buy a ticket.
The traffic was horrendous getting away last night but getting home 20 minutes later was definitely a price worth paying for seeing us beat a rival in a key game in the last minute

Moments that make football special

20 minutes….

Villa did just pull the wool over the refs eyes they stuck his head up the sheep's backside

It is with the right players. The problem this season is using that approach without the players to do it. Forest being an example but many examples of having the ball and doing naff all with it because you've taken away your attacking threat from the game, just trying to keep the ball. United another example. We all battered Southgate for his tactics despite getting us to finals we hadn't been to in 50 plus years and the argument for me always was it wasn't just that way that could have got us to them finals. We won't ever know but that is how I feel here, we didn't have to play slow and garbage at Everton to get the win, the outcome makes people think that is the only way. Last night I thought was good and far less boring than we have been this season, Bernardo playing central and a control of the game whilst being proactive with it too. That hasn't happened often enough this season and it is where I feel other approaches can work too. You need to control a game with purpose, I think last night we did that, a lot of the season we haven't.

He is setting a base for next season when we have Rodri back and a few new players who will take time under pep as usual! The treble season we wasn't great till after Christmas when we became a machine and winning games! This base with bringing the attacking players on later when team are getting tired after watching us keep the ball for 70 mins is good management good football.. am looking at our games now differently for the first time under pep and it's took me this long! Control possession will blunt even the best teams and when confident is high you can play this football quicker which opens up teams more!
