Aston Villa (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Although today was about Pep, Bernie and Stones...

That aside, Reijnders is genuinely one of the worst players I've seen in a City Shirt. The lad is absolutely bobbins.
He is actually worse than Antoine Sibierski, I never thought I would ever say that of any City player.

I thought today showed how much we need an in depth rebuild. That was easily our second team (with some moving on included in it) and they weren’t good enough. Strength in depth appears to be lacking for me. First team, strongest in the league by a long chalk but start making changes and we weaken ourselves substantially.

A game which meant nothing to either team, 3 weeks before a world cup, managed by a manger who's leaving. As far as assessment criteria...it's not the first game I would choose.
As I said it's not based on that game....but a good portion of the season where we saw the exact type of performance as today when certain players are on the pitch.

Guess we all need a few days to get over the emotional side of this end of era stuff. However, it tells me a lot when Bernie and John were saying they could almost not play due to the emotions and both were still better than some of our depth players.

It will be key that once the new manager is confirmed we are ruthless because if we suddenly expect the likes of Lewis, Tiijani, Savinho, Nico, Marmoush and Kovacic to play at the same level as the recent departures we are in for a bit of a rough ride.

To maintain the high standards and quality we have enjoyed for the last decade it needs new key players - players at world class levels and to do that you need to get shut of a few listed above. Then if we need to rotate try and incorporate the likes of Nypan, Reis and Mcaidoo rather than roll out players who have been given chances and done not a great deal.

Anyway for now we say thanks to Pep and his team for the best decade in living memory but as with all things in life the king is dead, long live the king!

A class act from the Villa to give Bernie and Stonesy a guard of honour as they were subbed off.

The irony of Bernardo receiving a thoroughly sportsmanlike, enthusiastically participated in guard of honour from the opposition, was I’m sure not lost on anybody in the stadium

But this game out of all those games didn't matter. You said it did. "It matters for the future". Games which had a tangible impact on the end result of a competition outweighed this game massively. Today, was about something else. A game of football was played, but it didn't matter. You can think it did though. I'm not here to tell you your own mind!

Thank you pep for everything. Thank you to all you guys in here whether I’ve agreed or disagreed with you. Love you all my blue lads and ladies. See you all tomorrow to give our pep the goat the send off he deserves

The performances always matter...the result is irrelevant. That performances with the way villa ran through us was very similar to earlier in yhe season with certain players on the pitch....those players could well be in the squad next year which is why it matters for the future

Please, please , please Khaldoon will you investigate the corruption of Pigmol/PL/VAR, it is killing us and cost us a title.
I’m done putting money into it if we don’t fight it, enough is enough and being nice with them just makes them laugh in our faces, find these bent b4stards out and nail em.

On another note, the new Pep stand is class and once everybody is in there it will make one hell of a racket, the atmosphere in there was great.
The presentations at the end were very emotional, my 13 yr old son asked me several times if I was Ok, the end of several eras, thank you Pep & the backroom team, and Johnny Stones and Bernie.
It was nice to say thank you to Gundog & Ederson as well.

Again. No. The manager was leaving, players were leaving, emotions matter, so a quality performance should not be expected. Stones and Bernardo said themselves they really couldn't concentrate. It's a terrible game to assess. It's simply not the norm.

They were very good in the first half and we should have been at least 3-0. Seconds half absolute rubbish and I agree a few players are well below the standard we are used to in Pep era. The celebratory farewell atmosphere didn’t help the competitive nature of the game. We criticise this squad but we got a domestic cup double, finished 2nd and were the leagues highest scorers. That said, we need some additions and some departures to get to best in Europe standards.
