Aston Villa (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

I've just watched Phil's "offside goal on MotD and still can't believe VAR. But then Rooney and Shearer were asked for their views on guards of honour for retiring players when they are substituted. The opinion was " not during the game". Now the only other example I can think of was John Terry when the game was halted, the players lined up and he was applauded off. Everyone of the "pundit community" thought this was "a jolly nice idea" as it certainly was and , yesterday the behaviour of the Villa team and the Villa fans was exceptionally sporting. But what no-one has raised is the question of team selection. I'm not referring to yesterday's match, but Villa's home game against Spurs. They made 7 or 8 changes and fielded a notably weakened team, for very understandable reasons, and lost. Had they won Spurs would have been relegated and West Ham still in the PL.

Losing to the tightest offside goal because of VAR feels very on point.

End of an era.

Thank you Pep.
Thank you Bernardo.
Thank you Stones.

We don't get the benefit of VAR or refereeing decisions like the rags do ..... you can juggle the ball in your hands in the penalty area at Old Trafford before you score, and still be awarded a goal there!

Going back to Phil's goal It is clear that the VAR evidence does not support their decision to rule the goal offside. But we have come full circle now. On the tele the commentary team tried to convince us that the decision was correct despite the stills. I excuse Guy Mowbray who could not, and made no attempt to keep the rising tone of incredulity out of his voice. We are now in the astonishing situation of relying on visual, eye sight opinion to verify VAR decisions. Absolutely laughable. And I have to say that VAR's performance in the Bolton v Stockport match was just as ruinously ludicrous.

Your second sentence kind of some up the dichotomy the club now inherits. You say Pep didn’t trust certain players mainly listed in your large middle paragraph, however, he brought them in and more importantly they are mainly on VERY long contracts.

If they are as you infer a load of bums, I don’t see how we get rid of them without taking a huge loss, a loss that would probably put us in more PSR. trouble.
I know - thats why I think we have a big issue....I dont think many of them are anywhere near good enough...I thkn Vianna is going to have to pull a rabbit out of the hat as he needs to buy quality but only a couple of players while getting rid of quite a few

We have lost Stones and Bernardo - those two will have been on substantial contracts. And then you have to factor in Peps contract as well - I cant imagine the club will give ANY incoming manager the same pay as Pep - no one starts at that at any rate surely so we will make savings on those 3 straight away.

Ake is another one who will be on a decent wedge so there is possible saving there and I think the emergence of NOR really helps us out there as he is able to play a number of positions.

We were really stupid to turn down the spurs offer for Savio last year....hopefully someone comes back in for him and we can get somewhere near that figure (doubt it)

Marmoush we may get our money back - it isnt that he isnt a decent player - he just doesnt fit.

Rico Lewis is a free hit - we didnt buy him so anything that anyone pays for him is profit

Reijnders is the one where we will definitely have to take the hit - he will probably end up staying but he shouldnt be anywhere near the pitch - he is shit but we may have to wait another year to get rid of him

But if you've beaten First, third, fourth 'n fifth on the way or in the Final, , , , , , , , , ,?
Agreed i think its been an unbelievable run but soon these domestic cups nationally will be de prioritised by media..sponsors and tgen clubs as they will prioritise any euro comp. Look at villa.. win a mid table cup... play Frieburg in the final.. a club only started in the 60's yet tgey are now regarded as some european royalty ha.. priorities change..

Even some of our fans said they wouldn't want us giving a voluntary guard of honour for other clubs players.

I wouldn't mind, even if was someone like Salah who was the main player for our main rivals in this era. It's good sportsmanship to recognise players who contributed a lot.
Zola got a standing ovation when he was subbed in his last appearance against us for Chelsea. Completely spontaneous.

We only had about 1,000 fans there, can't remember that to be honest. It got a bit bad tempered at half time so they shut the bar as it was the same concourse as the Chelsea fans in the underpass, nearer to the opposite goal where the fans are now.

At Maine Road? Was it already known in October 2002 that Zola was leaving that season? Maybe my memory is awry.

Awesome but emotional day from start to finish.
Ancoats square was superb early doors. Great gathering in the sun.
Match was a bit of damp squib. Don't even want to talk about the team because I would say 7 of those starters are literally no way good enough. Rico Lewis. I have no idea how he is in the premier league.
Anyway. A great day. The new stand looked amazing from South Level 3. Thought the whole send off was really well done. Onto the next 10 years. See you next season
