I see the Villa are 4-0 up on Brentford.

An instant improvement, now that they’re not shackled by the Slip's tactics?

Or just a coincidence?
No coincidence. Gerrard was obviously either not good enough or had lost the players (or perhaps even both).

That said, I think credit should go to Aaron Danks. One to watch in management IMO, I’m surprised Villa don’t seem to be considering him seriously. To be fair he’s got no management experience and he’s only 37, however he has close to 20 years of coaching experience and (not dissimilar to Graham Potter before joining the Swans) has an almost uniquely rounded education.

Birmingham youth - coach (-2005)
West Brom youth - various roles (2005-2016)
England - Head of Specialist Coaching and Lead Offensive Specialist Coach (2016-2020)
England u21 - Assistant Manager (2020-2021)
Anderlecht - Assistant Manager (2021)
Aston Villa - Assistant Manager (2021-)

During his time with England he was part of the coaching staff of the World Cup-winning England u20 team and spent time coaching with serial NBA winners Golden State Warriors.

That is a proper managerial career development, the way it used to be. Brian Clough, Joe Mercer etc. are great examples of doing a proper apprenticeship after the playing career is over. This idea of giving big jobs to celebrity players doesn’t work and is wrong on many levels, I think it started with the rags (Brian Robson?). It seems the more money is put into football the less sensible chairmen become.
