That’s never really going to work in the real world though. If you give people anywhere in the world the right to apply for asylum the system will be blocked up with fraudulent requests.

Not to mention that even if you had a reasonable and fair upper limit, you would still get too many genuine cases.

You mean exactly like the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Programme that applied to Syria, Afghan and Ukraine?

The catch was the didn't get to chose their country of destination, bar those Afghans who worked for the UK Armed forces who were relocated here under an entirely different programme.

If they have the money they can come on a tourist visa and then claim asylum. Some get no home office support (housing and the subsistence payment) as they stay with relatives, but hotels are used for short periods while family housing or a HMO is sourced. The last thing the Home Office want to do is use hotels due to the cost.
