Atmosphere Thread | 2025/26

Lots and lots of missing regulars around me in 315 most of which resulted in empty seats didn't help.

Sunderland we're loud but sang in some strange language;)

I'd say we weren't anything much above average over the 90 mins apart from a few mins when we were under pressure.
Leeds game was better

I've been leeds three times as a student so not sure where you got that from. Practically giving them away
I'm just going off their criteria. Don't know how you got yours and whether it was official channels or someone selling one on.

Feels like there is no soul in our ground anymore, yes there are usually a couple of times in a match a few chants get going but nothing with any passion or verocity, all abit half arsed and then deemed to be a "good" atmosphere because it wasn't completely silent for a couple of minutes each half. Doesn't help that every game there are a new groups of people sitting together for the first time, no continuity and the ss / singing corner have lost their passion to make any noise other than an occasional zabaleta outburst.

We’ve moaned about the hospitality section above SSL0 making displays and flag waving at the start of games look bad, we’ve moaned that there are going to be GA+ seats in the expanded NSL1 that will have the same issue… but for me this is not a problem that should stop us making NSL1 the vocal stand because over the last few seasons, the actual singing section itself doesn’t even bother getting to their seats before kick off when displays are done and flags are being waved.

And that’s a kind shot. If it had taken in a wider shot of SSL0, you’d see chunks like that dotted about all over it. And it’s like this for every game. This stand doesn’t fill up until well after the game has kicked off, and it looks like this from around 37-53 minutes and from 80 minutes.

You’d be hard pressed to find another singing section in world football where this happens.

Things have changed support wise over the generations
A corner used to be a major event for the Kippax to get a big chant of City going for example

But my main disappointment is how some incredible bits of play e g. raking passes,
fantastic takes are just ignored by much of the crowd and maybe it goes over their heads.

I have a theory people used to play a lot more even on the school playground or wasteland whereas I wonder if these days they measure the players against a computer game not an actual human.

Sunderland forum universaly agreeing that the Etihad is the quietist stadium they have ever visited and a complete lack of noise from the home fans, and before anyone responds with "stadium of light is hardly noisy" that reply isn't really relevant to the point being made. Our home support has become the laughing stock of the league. Our "singing section " mostly weren't even in their seats when then players came out let alone make any noise to greet them!

Lots of people around me arriving 15 minutes after kick off, then heading to the bar/concourse 15 minutes before half time. Back in their seats 15 minutes into the 2nd half and leave completely with 15 minutes to go. Sad what we have become
If they are only seeing 30 minutes of the match they should be able to buy cut price tickets.

I said above on its day south stand level 1/ 0 can be brilliant, but how often does that happen now?

From where I sit, it seems to be really divided for some reason. You have the section right next to the away fans chanting and there seems to be another group towards the corner flag/ Colin bell stand. They rarely if ever join in with each other. Thats with no away fans between them as well. Why is that?

The point about fans not wanting to move because of the banter with the away fans. Other than the block right next to them, I rarely hear actually banter. We used to be great at coming up with funny/ smart chants towards them.

People are still drinking in the old/new bar. That’s what the club wants. That’s why the club invested £100,000 in the new bar. Fans were complaining about the massive queues to get a drink at the smaller bars on the concourses when the new bar didn’t exist. City listened and they turned the huge and unused void into the fabulous bar and bar area we have now.

When the new bar didn’t exists you used to have hundreds of singers standing and singing City songs next to the huge metal partition on the concourse separating home and away fans before kick off, especially for the big games. That only happens now against United, and there aren’t as many singers.

The whole routine of the fans and singers in SSL1 has changed since the new bar opened, and that routine will never change back to what it used to be.(sadly)

Beer, quick service, seating, a great space, and DJ tunes make people stay where they are for longer. Every match I see fans sat at the tables drinking and talking after the match has started. I’m not a quick drinker, so I’ve missed the start if the match and some goals as well, being honest.

Sounds like people are just there to get pissed and not watch the football?

Maybe as well just watch the game in town in a bar. Could the club do more to encourage people back to their seats?

South stand is pisshead central. When I moved up to SS3, I couldn't believe how many people arrived in their seats 5 minutes after kick off, left for the bar 5 minutes before half time, came back 5-10 minutes after the restart, and left at 85 minutes.
There were three season ticket holders directly in front of us who I reckon actually saw no more than an hour of any game.

I moved back to CB3 the next season. At least people stay in their seats up there, even if half of them are asleep.

We must have the oldest fanbase in the PL. That's the 'problem' when it comes to atmosphere. Youngsters are priced out or not interested any more.

Apart from the group under the overhang at the back of 115 starting the chants, the other fans in 115, bar after the goals for a short period of time couldn’t be arsed singing. They just stood in silence. That was pretty much replicated across the South stand, bar a pocket of fans further to my right, which I can’t see, who were also starting chants. All in all it was a pretty poor effort from SSL1, which has been replicated throughout the season, bar the odd match. The singing, noise and atmosphere in SSL1 is definitely on a downwards trajectory and is getting worse. I thought blocks 111, 110 and 109 were decent yesterday, prompted by old skool banter from the Sunderland fans, who were decent.

Here's the forum in question. There's only one comment which says we've got the quietest ground in the league, wouldn't class that them "universally agreeing".

Most of them just surprised at the number of tourists and half and half scarves since they last visited, I don't blame them

The club can’t force people out of the bar to their seats. People are still talking, drinking, and eating.

To be fair, the DJ stops playing music before kick off. The bar is still open throughout the match. The TV screen tells people the match is starting shortly.

Atmosphere would be greatly improved if either a) City hadn't spent the last 10 years systematically pricing out normal people b) the club got to grips with the queues at half-time so people didn't feel the need to rush off at 40 min and beat everyone to the front c) City fans could go a couple of hours without getting on the beers.

It's getting pretty sad. It takes 5-10 mins for the ground to fill up after kick-off because they're all having a pint, half the ground goes to the concourse on 40 mins because they all want a pint, it takes until 50 mins for the ground to fill up again because they're all having a pint, then from 80 mins the singing bit starts to trickle away because they all want a pint at the Townley/Mary D's.

If you can't watch football without having 2-3 pints in the space of 90 mins just watch it at home or in the pub imo.

Remeber years ago one of the things they did to speed up service was have staff next to those huge ice buckets on the concourse and you could get 2 bottles for a tenner, took about 30 secs to get served, no ideas why they stopped it .

Not sure how much you read at least 3 posts saying worse atmosphere they have ever experienced, and can't beleive how quiet 50000 people can be all on the first 2 pages.

I can't remember how old I was, perhaps 14, I was stood on the Kippax as the teams kicked off for the second half. I couldn't work out what was going on as the stand was nearly empty, hardly anyone had come back.
It turned out that the Grand National was also on and everyone has stayed by the bars to listen to radios they'd brought with them. Once the main race was over they all returned.
Ok this was a one off but it, to me, highlights how people are looking through rose tinted specs.
According to a lot of people on here the Kippax was always rammed 10 minutes before kick off, they sang throughout the match and didn't leave until the lights were turned out.
Bollocks. The Kippax had people arriving late and leaving early it was just not as noticeable. It was also often quiet during a game as no football club had fans that sang for 90 minutes.
Seats make it look far worse but trust me, fans have always gone to the bar/bogs whilst the match is on.
