Atmosphere Thread | 2025/26

Come on blues, be honest, this is fabulous!
As a society we have all but forgotten the magic of communal singing. It used to be a real thing. Everywhere. It does things to the brain. It makes you feel good and part of something. At a high level, the wonder choral singing is mindblowing. All a bit off topic but im a music geek and see the magic on a stadium of fans and pro singers.

Thanks for that, totally agree, community singing wherever it be, is amazing, no argument. Always loved that clip though, thanks. There used to be a piano in the pub we went in eons ago, a pianist would start playing about the time everyone was welled oiled, and the singing would begin. Magic.

Anyone else notice those vuvuzelas at the game yesterday. Fucking annoying. People got em in town today too. Hope the stadium don’t allow them in next season. Proper atmosphere killer. Remember South Africa World Cup?

Loads of people want the expanded North Stand to be different things. I think it will do fine like a few of us have said all along. If we are missing one thing, I suggest it’s Helen’s Bell to prompt chants of “Come on City” to ring around the ground.

Yes, dreadful.

My Father told me, the local pub we drink in and play bowls for, back in the 70s when he first started drinking in there, used to have a piano in the Vault and fairly regularly the whole place singing along with each other and a random punter on the piano. Especially, the old WW2 vets.

In believe this was a common part of pub culture for decades that has simply disappeared.

Your Dad’s right, it was a tradition. The pianist would plonk out a succession of tunes and everyone would join in. Sounds pathetic now I know, but it brought people together, enjoying the moment. Sadly the pub culture is being decimated …people getting together, could be being seen as a threat?

This was a thing! Stupid old tunes, but people did it all together. Society was more united!

What an opportunity this is/was to rejuvenate the whole atmosphere. Noise bouncing off the roof and cascading down, twice as loud as anywhere else. All it would take is a bit of marketing but I don’t think they are even aware.
I don't think all is lost just yet Dave. I know it's not completely what we had in mind, but I really do think this can still be something that rejuvenated the atmosphere

Some incredible noise from SSL3 yesterday - I think there will be more singers in SSL1 next season. If the Guardiola Stand contribute and SSL3 continue to do their thing, it could make a big difference to the atmosphere. It was genuinely deafening at times yesterday - everyone was chipping in and that’s what we’ve missed before, it’s always been left to the South Stand. Lots of reasons for optimism IMO.

Yes I agree. It only needs a relatively small number of vocal fans to take season tickets in those safe standing areas and the rest will follow on. People will want to sit there if it makes noise like yesterday.

Although there were occasions when we had FOUR stands singing four separate songs instead of the three that we used to have. But the way that the sound spreads both ways round the ground from that stand is what makes it different.

There was actually some decent atmosphere in the concourse in the Pep stand at half time getting our pints. Way better facilities there tbf. But there was some decent singing in there even

I wonder if they'll look to re do the SS if the acoustics of the Pep really work. I think tiering kills atmosphere

Thing is, I'm not sure if the engineering can be done, to tinker around, once a stand is completely in place. I wonder if it doesn't create structural weaknesses. There are people on here with an engineering background (it's been quite fun following what are to me the geeky conversations on the North Stand Construction thread — I've tried to follow them with my zero background in the field). They would know. Calling @jrb who, I have the impression, is an engineer by trade. There were others on that thread who were apparently in the construction trade, or knowledgeable about it.

True. Especially with that internal cable structure keeping the system up. But a big bank of voices singing as one is a better look and sound. I wonder how many points a season that is worth? How many points our potential atmosphere is potentially worth! You're not telling me the ref didn't get the message and let a few go after he got booed to fck yesterday after that ridiculous VAR display on the screens. A massive atmosphere could be worth 7 or 8 points a season.

I may be imagining this, but I don't think so. The old geezer that used to lead “Abide With Me” before the k.o for the cup final in the sixties and seventies used to sing it a cappella. (I never did know his name). No Royal Marines Band back-up, or if there was it was very soft. There was something incredibly moving about his quavery voice. If he got the whole stadium, the old Wembley, joining in it was pure, full body goose bumps with the hairs on the back of your neck standing up.

Edit: this is pretty off topic, but the most astonishing discovery I've made recently is a vocal ensemble called Ensemble Altera, and an album called Dazzling Light. Give it a try, preferably when no-one's likely to bother you, and on good quality cans. It's on streaming services.

SSL1, 111, 110, 109 superb, 1st half.

Can't hear NSL2 from SSL1.

Not having a dig, just being honest.
The problem is your location in SSL0(1).
The North Stand was extremely loud. The noise carries very well

My dad was a pub pianist for many years, around Newton Heath, Failsworth, Hollinwood, Werneth (When it had pubs) and Oldham. He and the pub goers used to love it.
