Playing like an Italian team is a very different thing here. It means "City play very slowly and defensively" it's an insult, just as when the Italians say playing very English is insulting to the technique and tactical awareness of players.

I personally think this one is lost in translation and he's trying to say that we play a game with high possession but a very strong centre mid, which is how many Italian teams play now.

I don't think many Italian European sides would be beaten 4-0 in a European match like Porto did. The same Italian standards that ironically beat his Chelsea team in Naples the other week.
