Yeah it's quite strange in retrospect but they had a really exciting period in the mid 70s with Trevor Francis and Bob Latchford etc, plus Villa in the Second Division

I recall one game v Brum at St Andrew’s, maybe a night match, pitiful crowd there. Their end next to us tried to get a sack the board chant going and couldn’t get it off the ground. The next time they tried it, we joined in and it took off. The Brummies appreciated our help and applauded us. At the end of the game both sets of fans stayed behind (well we were kept in) and continued to chant with them.

Strangely considering their hooligan reputation I have always found the Birmingham fans ok during numerous trips to St Andrews unlike their arrogant rivals at Villa.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to tomorrow. There is still the magic of the FA Cup for me. It’s always a welcome change the Saturday Cup games, seeing families turn up at the Etihad with big smiles on their faces.

One possible mitigating factor for that season was the energy-crisis and the number of midweek afternoon fixtures

We all remember the Coventry LC Replay and (ironically)Plymouth Away but I have no idea how it affected the other clubs.

I can remember Neil Lennon making his only appearance for City in a 3-0 win at Birmingham in 87-88
I also recall sitting next to Lennon at Ewood Park on the same day as the Hillsborough disaster.
It was a lovely spring afternoon, we parked adjacent to a canal towpath,and I can still picture the Blackburn fan, as he asserted: "I see Liverpool fans have been up to their old tricks again"

Funny because I was Tottenham on Wednesday and even now I'm struggling to remember the starting XI.
I certainly don't recall Gundogan appearing as a late sub

Got a reply to a letter I sent to City today about the hoarders of Liverpool fans in my section on Sunday. Received a very patronising reply…. We take these issues seriously and we take every step to prevent it happening - that would be a good answer except it is happening - so how are City gonna stop it happening? Starting to get irritated with the corporate speak and the patronising tone displayed by the club to loyal supporters. I’d have more respect if they’d said… actually old chap it’s all about money so we flog the tickets to anyone prepared to pay our extortionate prices so hard cheese and all that….

So the club aren't even kicking these people out when they're identified. Pretty obvious they aren't taking it seriously

I agree with that. The difference is that Birmingham really were the real thing, an absolutely fearsome mob, who didn’t need to be attacking normal supporters. Villa have always wanted to be Birmingham in that sense, the epitome of wannabes, trying to prove something, hence you have always had a higher risk factor at Villa as a normal non hooliganism fan. Let’s not forget a Villa bloke in his forties assaulting a kid at Wembley after our League Cup win against them, sums them up.

It isn't that hard for someone to say only members who have bought before a certain date and have previous history of at least five home games a season can purchase tickets. It's also not that hard to write some code that can show how many members over the past five years have only purchased one or two tickets per season and all for the same opponent. Then a bit of donkey work scrolling through social media and there may be tell tale signs Mr S. Couser from the Wirral isn't a City fan

Always thought Birmingham City were very like us, both overshadowed by more famous neighbours, large multi ethnic fan base, poorly developed inner city grounds in working class neighbourhoods, support predominantly from the city unlike the neighbours. We have left much of that behind now and Birmingham are like we were in 99 or perhaps 2002 under keegan. In some ways I envy them the experience and feel we have lost much of what made us City along the way. Good luck Brummies

I agree, always had a soft spot for them and have personal links to the city by having a Brummie wife. Always like to keep an eye on their scores, hate villa and like to see them do well.
