I've made multiple posts this season talking about how it was such a shame that Laporte backed out on our deal because other than Umtiti, who is next to impossible to obtain, this guy is perfect for us. The way I see it, we bring in Laporte now while shipping the Mangler off either this window or the summer, then next season we go with JS, NO, VK, and AL as our CBs and once Kompany's contract runs out after next season we replace him with de Ligt.

That's very short sighted.

By that measure, we don't really need Bernardo Silva either. But here's the rub: they're both 23. Eventually Spanish Dave and Nico are going to decline, or move on, extensions or otherwise. Bringing in Bernardo and Laporte now makes sense on every level. They are cheaper than they will be in a few years. They are ideal and we don't know if such will be available in the future. They will have years of training and development under THE best coach in the sport.

Laporte is the long term partner for Stones we've needed since Pep arrived. There are no other options, certainly none better, and that's why it's back on.

He is one quarter French Basque so was able to play for Atletico Bilbao. He actually has joint French/Spanish nationality.

I can potentially see Kompany being used as a 4th choice, depends just how much patience Pep has with him. Realistically, if we had a dependable 3rd choice since the start of the season instead of Mangala, the 4th choice option really wouldn't have been that necessary - just the odd cup game here and there and even then, Tosin has filled in on some of those occasions.

If Kompany is happy to be very much down the pecking order, which he has no right to be unhappy about, I don't have a problem with it. If we have adequate cover for Dinho in the DM role (i.e Fred) then Dinho can also cover at CB if we're at dire straights.

I'd go for Frenkie de Jong instead of de Ligt, personally - much more versatile and has the higher ceiling.
