And like I said in my second original post, his passion is also coaching (rather than scouting) and he seems happy to work with what's in front of him. He never gives up on a player who hasn't given up on him, so maybe it's worth trying preseason with a couple of our prior, expensive CB's (plus Denayer) to see if the needs aren't met with one (rather than two) new addition.

Fair enough. That makes sense. I guess my point is that we don't know that we aren't taking care of Full backs or CM with these buys. When Pep went to Bayern nobody was thinking Lahm would play CM. I am seeing important pieces of the team being purchased. I can't tell you where they are going to play or whether they will push other players to new positions. So where you might see 6 CBs I see 6 very good players who could play in many different positions.

That said, I expect Otamendi to be sold. He doesn't look like a Pep player at all where Mangala I think could turn into one if he was coached properly. I don't think Ota was ever a long term solution for us. He was bought because we had a chance of keeping him from United. We can get our money back on him pretty easily IMO.

Does Otamendi lack the ability to be coached? Coz it seems you have different standards for judging the 2.

No, and I admit I may be completely wrong here, but its his tackling. The rashness of it, his instinct to go to it almost as a first resort. It seems very un-Pep. It seems that it is part of his DNA, not something that he has learned. Like I said I could be wrong.
 
Was supposed to be fit for pre-season following ankle fracture dislocation last month according to his club.
Unsurprisingly reports now saying won't be ready till "first few weeks of next season".
Guardiola still keen to sign.
Very very high risk transfer this one given the money involved.

I agree....just posted the same thing over on Gundogan thread....as his injury could mean not 100% for season.....Maybe we still thinking about the long term and both players will be back 100% at some point early in the season but got to be some concern that we need to be moving to other targets?

I understand how Gala has shifted him to RB to suit their needs, and I understand how posters here have shifted him to suit their needs (or impressions), but it's crazy to me that we're not considering Jason a viable 4th choice CB.

Martin is obviously going. If Pep put his foot down and insisted on one new CB, then it makes sense (despite the brutal financial implications) to take the hit on one of Mangala or Otamendi and support the new manager. Two new €50m CB's seems like mismanagement to me, though.

I completely agree mate, I can't see why everyone assumes he will play right back. Pep uses full backs like Alaba, Alba, Alves etc who are basicly wingers so why would he put Denayer there? Also Wilmots has just come out and said he considers Denayer as Kompany's replacement at the Euro's. For me Denayer will be at centre back or maybe a holding midfielder at a stretch so we can shift to 3 at the back when attacking.

I think people are assuming RB because they want us to play him, but currently we have 4 CB's & are linked with 2 more (Laporte/Stones), assuming MDM leaves that puts us at 5 next season + Denayer = 6. Will he be one of the top 2 (or 3 if we play 3 at the back)? Guess most people assume we're not going to splash another £80m on CB's just to play a guy from youth team there.

Personally would love us to give him a chance at CB rather than spend another £80m on CB's, but if that does happen then RB seems the next best option for him, as it's that or not play at all.
