We have issues at the back cuz of the lack of coverage from the midfield in a proper system, which Pellegrini is at fault for.
That's just an opinion. I don't necessarily agree with it. Our Central defending was not always great. We've given up more goals due to poor CB errors than teams dominating us in midfield. Also when Kompany is injured we are left with only One good CB, Otamendi. Who himself is error prone.

39 million is hell of a lot for a player in a position which we really dont need a new signing. We have more dire places, like fullbacks and central midfield to improve... Otamendi, VK, Mangala and Denayer is a good 4 cbs.
we need this lad we really do. we also don't want him going to a rival.

I'd argue CB is one of the positions we least need to be in the market for. Most assume (& I hope) we'll say bye to MDM & replace with Denayer; leaving us with 4 competent CB's by anyones standard.

We've got good CB's we just have horrible cover for them (both in front & at fullback) & the system we play exposes them yet further.

Whilst I think Laporte is a good player I don't see him faring any better than the current lot if you just throw him into the current team in place of Otamendi/Mangala; sort out the actual issue & buy some CM's & fullbacks first and foremost before we look at other areas.
I disagree. If he keeps his form from a year ago. Him with Komps or Ota would form a very good CB pairing. Part of our problem stems from our poor ability to play out of pressure. And this is frankly because when Komps is out we don't have enough capable defenders who are comfortable on the ball.

Wed be crisper with ball playing CBs and better ball playing players everywhere on the field. Including CB.

I don't doubt he would form a good partnership with them, you seem to have misread - I said he's a good player, however we don't need him as the others are just as capable.

Not seen enough of Denayer to comment, but from what I gather is he not supposed to be competent on the ball? Otamendi is our best passer from CB & Kompany isn't half bad. To be able to play out of pressure you can't just have 2 ball playing CB's & think that solves the problem - who do they pass to? The CM's & FB's. Hence back to my original point that we need CM's/FB's far more than we need CB's.

I think laporte will come in, and mangala will... stay. Denayer might be a utility player next year, then next summer we re evaluate and cut down our centre backs from 5 to 4.
2016:
Kompany Laporte Otamendi Mangala Denayer
2017:
Kompany Laporte Mangala/Otamendi Denayer

Nah, Pep would never sacrifices a attacking and creative option to a defender, ever. Laporte comes , Mangala or Denayer goes and if mangala stays , Laporte isnt coming.

Your statement is illogical. You present a scenario where Laporte comes and Mangala or Denayer goes, so in theory we could have Laporte and Mangala. You then say if Mangala stays, Laporte isn't coming.

Ive thougth of another situation where we actually buy Laporte and use Denayer without selling Mangala and use 3 central defender when playing the kind of 3-3-3-1 that Bayern use atm. Selling Kolarov and Zaba/Clichy would also suit buying additional midfielder instead of actually splashing for fullbacks. Sagna plays cb/fullbacks allround. Makes sense with who we are linked with and the plan that Pep uses atm... just a theory

Mangala out would be my guess with Kompany and Otamendi being an experienced pair of centre backs supplemented by a French speaking Denayer and Laporte.

I think Galatasaray playing him at right back has been a good way of getting Denayer used to more time on the ball. He's certainly got a cool head on him. If everything goes perfectly (as it often doesn't) I'd hope to have those two as our defensive partnership for years to come.
