Mangala and Otamendi came to us for huge fees and big reputations. I presume we'll be going Kompany, Otamendi, Laporte and Denayer with Humphries and Toisin as back ups (depending on pre-season performances).

Him and Stones, a new defensive dawn, where passing the football is the most natural thing in the world.

Hardly a hop, skip and a jump before Gundogan simply collects and the rest is magic.
From your mouth to Pep's ears and Bluemoons eyes.

I do hope we are not shoehorning Denayer in at right back simply because he's homegrown?

He doesn't seem to have the raw pace and agile frame that a modern day full-back requires?

Stones' natural position was at right-back, so who knows?

I wanted Rose and Cresswell, but that ship looks long sailed.

denayer has a lot of the required skills to be a fullback in Pep's system, and no one else we have seems to fit. On top of that, pep loves tactical flexibility so having a CB who can play fullback or visa versa means he can easily change formation on the fly.

He is also playing a fair amount of RB at galatasaray and has had some stand out performances there.

So I wouldn't say shoehorned because of his HG status, more his flexibility and obvious talent.

I think Denyaer is quicker than you might think as well, he's no slouch.

Seriously if we get Laporte and Stones.for 50m euros .. Pep wanting them... Fair enough... But txiki needs to be fired for this... Spending all that on mangala and otamendi.. Its not my money... But this is a joke

Yes we are. No need pretending. If he is good enough a talent for Belgium, we are hoping he'd be good enough for us. Becay he is one of ours and we hope one of ours makes it. Talent wise, he is capable. But had he not already beeb one of ours, I sincerely doubt anyone here will be going " Hey, how about we get that RB kid from Galatasary to come play CB for us."

I'll probably get slaughtered for it but I'd rather break the bank for Hummels and Subotic. Our 4 cb's would be them and kompany and denayer.
We took a chance with otamendi and mangala. Why risk it with laporte?
Subotic is a backup at Dortmund. Ball skills below Sockratis who isn't that great on the ball. You are thinking 4 years ago when Subotic was the rave here. I said then that Hummels was the far superior player, and the one we should be after of the 2. Time I believe has confirmed my suspicions back then.

Well it seems like we are getting Laporte AND stones! Quite chuffed about that to be honest!

I didn't realise subotic had declined.
What I was getting at was that it isn't a position to take a gamble on. Of course you can uncover a rough diamond and end up with a world beater.

5 players naturally capable of playing CB seems a lot but having Kompany, Laporte, Otamendi, Denayer, Stones makes sense to me both for now (given Kompany's injuries especially) and the future if Denayer and Stones play quite a bit at RB and DM respectively. Only one would need to start on the bench and we could interchange between 3 and 4 at the back at will during a game - granted we sign the right LB

And If we were to sign a young LB we could have a very longterm back 4 to work with once Kompany retires/leaves

Kinda wish we had signed Luke Shaw tbh

Having 4 senior CB's and a young one in Denayer who really should be playing seems like absolute madness to me, it's far too much. We fuck about with chopping and changing too much already and we never get a settled partnership, so fuck knows how often we'd line up with the same pairing if we had 4 CB's all expecting to play. I'd hope we are only bringing in one, otherwise we really need to be getting rid of two from Kompany, Otamendi and Mangala, otherwise we're just vastly overstocked and will go back to a different pairing every bloody week and the shit that that brings.

Seems like we are paying well over the odds as per usual. I haven't seen much of him in action so I will reserve judgement.

So if we sign stones and Laporte will vinny become a squad player? Or stones to right back and Laporte partners vinny?

I doubt any of the backline who played against Southampton will be here next season so we won't have 5 CBs.

One saving grace is that pep seems to like a more settled approach? Not as many changes in key positions?

Not sure about natural, his back is too long to make a real good fullback....bit like boateng

I agree,i cant see either of Mangala or Otamendi surviving the cull, while both have their attributes as defenders, they simply aren't footballers.
