The Laporte transfer is an interesting one and one where I feel we won’t get value for him.
The value deal would be if United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, Spurs, PSG, Real Madrid decided they wanted him.
At that point we could get decent money for him, we probably have ones there who don’t and the ones that potentially we would not sell to.
We then have the next lot down in midtable teams or higher foreign teams and they will not pay above £30 million if that for a player with no sell on value and high wages.
It does not seem as if there is too many of those and potentially Laporte might not want to go.
Then we have Saudi and the wages on offer. He would be an amazing signing for a Saudi team. They are so far buying lots of players, but few defenders.
Laporte is quality, but he is not the exciting player they seem to be targeting. If they where to offer £25-30 million, with no reduction in wage (probably an increase), so no pay off which is the issue with Maguire etc.
We keep him, means we’re paying 5-6 million for a player who won’t play that much, could potentially have a negative effect on the squad and transfer fee goes down.
A loan with some Option/ obligation to buy, never seem to be that great when we do these.
So whilst it is easy to say he would cost us £60 million or worth £50 million etc. I think the scenario of us buying him and the value cannot be used in this instance.
£25 million with no pay off, might be our best option.
