B of the bang

It looked fantastic with bags all over it.

It got cut up and scrapped. Spikes were cut off it. It looked like a fucked up metal tree.

Total waste of money from day one.

When the wind blew the spikes used to wobble like fuck. I never walked near the fucker.

The idea was good, however the execution of it wasn’t. Having huge metal spikes hanging over a busy junction was an accident waiting to happen. Didn’t part of it fall off during some storm?
It shouldn't have been an issue at all - had it been installed properly and to the designer's specifications.

Typical council cost cutting killed it. Such a shame.

Funding for the sculpture was sourced from a European Regional Development Fund contribution of £700,000, the North West Development Agency contributing £500,000, and Manchester City Council providing the final £120,000 towards its completion.

Although the council had originally promised to store the complex central core and legs, these too were cut apart during removal, which casted further doubt on future prospects for the landmark sculpture’s return at the time, and in early July 2012, the core was finally sold as scrap for £17,000.

The designer was an artist not an engineer.

It was a stupid idea, but if an engineering company tenders for it, then it is on them not the Council.

'As part of the design, the spikes even swayed slightly in the wind in order to withstand gusts in excess of 100 mph (160 km/h).'

Design feature apparently...
