Back to the 4-2-3-1 - good call

My 4-2-3-1 will be

____________________ Hart ______________

Richards___Kompany_______Lescott___Clichy

_____________ Yaya _________ Nasri __________

AJ _________________Silva_____________Mario

____________________Aguero _____________

I'd like to see this, switching between 4-2-2-2 and 4-2-3-1

Guess you can call it 4-4-2 also - that's what Mancini calls it!

What we need is fluidity and switching of positions and players always open for the pass.

That's far too attacking. I'd only play this personnel at home against a team who won't get out their own half.

Away from home you need a bit more bite in the midfield from Barry/Milner/De Jong.

Also, this can't be your first 11, it's got Johnson in it.

The thing about our Lummux is that he usually glides past the first challenge he gets. This, and the fact that they don't want him getting up to full speed panics and pulls out of shape the opposition rapidly. This is what creates holes for Merlin etc. to work with.

Fancy us for the Europa now, and the league.

Is Lummux a derivation of Lump?

I was pleased to see the 4-2-3-1 back last night, with Ya Ya in advanced central midfield slot. It was great to have our great big daft lummux filling that great big lummox shaped hole for us, and he made the goal and had two or three of his trademark runs. I think that's the right formation for us for the harder games, predominantly the aways. It makes us much more solid, having Nige winning tackles there next to Barry at the back of the midfield. Milner, whilst he's got more "drive" than Nige, he just doesn't win the ball like he does. It really solidified us against a good side last night.

I think the other 4-2-2-2 formation, with Ya Ya deep-lying alongside Barry, will still be used for the home games, allowing us to play 2 strikers and get the best from Silva. But I think it was the right tactical decision to play 4-2-3-1 and I'm sure we'll see more of it.

I'll say it again. Nasri is currently a liability. We saw the problem with him yet again last night. Too many touches, not enough penetration. WE could have broken very fluently when they had a go at us last night but he stopped it on several occasion. And the other thing I say every game is the fullbacks. Clichy and Richards every time for me. Great to have them both playing. What a back four that is.

So I'd go with Aguero in for Nasri but otherwise I liked the shape of last night's team a lot for the rest of the season (away from home). Well done Mancini, you got it right. I feel very excited for the league campaign again.

You sir, are correct. Nothing to disagree with in that.

Agree with your post apart from the Nasri comments. He isn't yet the player we all expected but his performances of late have been pretty good. He keeps and protects the ball which is vital the way we play. Great options now though with everyone back fit and available.

Does anyone else think we play better in Europe with this formation?

Definitely, although I think 4-2-3-1 with Yaya and 4-2-3-1 without Yaya are two completely different things. Was surprised we didn't see Pizarro last night given the absence of the big man.
