Bit ridiculous for people to resent the lad for this. He's merely using a celebration to form a brand which is the work of the people he employs to maximise his commercial interests.

CR7 is a trademark just like this. Might not be as corny but point remains, its just a trademark logo.

The mark doesn't seem to offer much marketability in any case and the trademark was probably worth less than it would cost to defend and maintain its status.

It was only ever in respect of goods not the goal celebration itself, he put the 11 in it because otherwise it would have in all likelihood failed because it wouldn't be distinctive enough/ was too generic.

It is a bit sly but trademarks exist in much the same way that patents do, (the obvious difference though is patents will be exhausted after 20 years, where as you can renew trademarks) the authorities recognise the first to register a successful application not the first inventor or designer.
