Ballet On Ice

Yes I was there that day. I nearly didn't go as the weather was so bad I doubted they'd play. The pitch was terrible, not just snow but ice on a rock-hard surface.
It could really have been 5 or 6 for us, but Pat Jennings played a blinder. City were really superb, Bell & Young especially. I remember Dave Mackay putting in a bone-crunching tackle on Neil Young, and I feared the worst as Neil crashed to the ground, but he just got up and played even better.
Happily it was captured on TV, and the world could see that we were headed for the title.

I was. Oddly enough I only realised it was iconic game when I started lurking on here and realised it was called the ballet on ice.

The two reasons I remember it so distinctly were, it was the first game I was allowed to go to with just my mates and not my elder brothers in tow keeping an eye on me, and seeing Jimmy Greaves live.

I still remember Greaves wearing wearing kecks more or less down to his knees like a throwback from the 50s.

Oh and getting there an hour early so we could get a spot at the Kippax wall. Sadly my hand down clothes weren’t up to the job. :(

Yes I was there it was a great game. I was 14 I cant remember if I went with my dad or my mates.

Ken Mulhearn use to give himself room to make an easy save into a full length spectacular save.

Me too,it was very very cold stood in the Scoreboard End.Went with my Dad and I remember we called at my Uncle's house on Newport Street to get a warm and hot drink on our way home

I was there. I remember having to walk to All Saints in the snow to get the 82 bus back to Failsworth as due to the weather there was a shortage of special buses back to town. Two of us who went that day still go the matches together with the local SC. By coincidence we both ended up living up here in Cumbria after all these years. A right pair of glory hunters. Lol.

I was there with my dad. We lived at the corner of Mauldeth Road West and Yew Tree Road so didn't have far to walk but it still took ages to get to the ground.Actually witnessed a police horse slip over onto it's side! They are huge buggers and it was like watching a tree come down.Great game from both sides and went a long way to winning the title, other teams must have been thinking "shit,if they can do that on that surface we can all forget it".

Sat in the Platt Lane with my dad and brother , we travelled from Wigan in his company car Vauxhall Viva , no such thing as ABS , traction control , drive by the seat of your pants , we had a few hairy moments but we got there in one piece. The next problem was trying not to fall on your arse on the way to the game , but the game was well worth it , Neil Young played like he was on astro-turf , his balance and poise was incredible like all of our players on the day , that was a fearless team.
