There can't be any vote splitting in the Ballon d'Or, it is not how it works.

There was one person I knew would reply to my post, and in a very specific tone, and I knew who it would be hehehe

It doesn’t matter when the WC was played, in fact this time there’s even more time from the WC to the ceremony.
Vote splitting is definitely a factor even in ranked choice voting. There will be a “I have to pick a Man City player” sentiment followed by the obligation to rank Messi in a high position too.
 
If he starts the season the way he started last season, he will get it IMO.

If he has a slow start, I think people will focus more on his relative dry end to last season in terms of goals, and Messi will get ahead.

Never has a world cup been so intrinsic to a season before, compared to when they happen in the off-season. And it has never happened before.

Nobody 'has to pick City player'. Or they can pick all 5 choices as City players. It is simply a list of 5 players, with points/weight attributed accordingly. So vote splitting can't be a thing.
