Great players can play in any system. Simple truth is Mario isn't great.

Shame to see him go. A great character will be solely missed mainly for his off-field antics. Didn't perform at a consistent level but will always have fond memories of the Final and the 6-1 demolition derby. Hope he rekindles him form at Milan and wish him all the best in the future.
