Baltimore Orioles

Forget the Orioles, if you all need a baseball team to support the Kansas City Royals are currently the champions, were great less than a decade before I was born and had been shit my whole life other than the last few years. Makes the current success all the much sweeter. Sound familiar? ;)

Yep a blue and a Mets fan ;-)

Anyone else had an email from these saying "Thanks for signing up" with the username they give being your City number? Is this City signing people up for shit with partner companies again? I've only just got rid of Etihad Airways sending me regular shite.

I'd be interested to see what the e-mail said if you wouldn't mind copying and pasting it.

Haha WTf!? Had to do a double take when I saw the title of this thread.

I grew up and still live in Maryland. The Baltimore Orioles were my team growing up. I idolized Cal Ripken as a kid. My #1 childhood hero, the guy played almost his entire hall of fame career without missing a game. He played in 2,632 CONSECUTIVE games... Let that sink in for a little while. There's 162 games in a baseball season, much more than any other sport. He didn't miss a game for 16 seasons, while playing at an All-Star level, without steroids (as far as anyone knows) which were running rampant in baseball during the later part of his career. The guy is known as the Ironman and is still a legend in my neck of the woods.

If one of you guys receives an autograph from Cal Ripen Jr..... just let me take it off your hands. You probably wouldn't even appreciate it anyway. I mean it's just a poor excuse for rounders right?

Meet him once or twice and got his autograph on the front cover of his autobiography entitled "The only way I know" (i think). Might actually be worth some money one day.

But anyway.... Why would the O's(the nickname of the Oriloes) be emailing City fans? They're actually rivals and play in the same division of the NY Yankees with whom City are affiliated. I don't see City forming any kind of partnership with another MLB team, let alone another in the same division.

Very strange indeed.

(This next paragraph will probably only be relevant/worth reading for people with knowledge of MLB, you probably won't care otherwise)

Anyways, I've become more of a Washington Nationals fan recently (I live much closer to DC than B-more). A lot of it had to do with some Orioles players using steroids, which tainted some of my affection for some of my favorites growing up like Brady Anderson and Rafael Palmeiro, who actually lied to Congress about using steroids. The fact that it's a short subway ride to watch the Nats play, and a 45-60 minute trip up to Camden Yards to watch the Orioles probably had something to do with it. I also root for all the DC teams, and none of the Baltimore teams. Usually go to 3-5 Nats games a year and 1-2 Orioles games. Usually go to at least one game a season where they play each other. It's a strange feeling, but I feel I have a valid excuse to root for two baseball teams. It's not equivalent to supporting City and United or anything like that.

The Baltimore Orioles are one of the oldest professional clubs in American sports. The original team dominated minor and major league baseball for years and produced talents such as Babe Ruth and Lefty Grove. American League President Ban Johnson wanted a club in the NY market and transfered the Orioles to Manhattan.... lock, stock & barrel where the team eventually became.... The New York Yankees.

Baltimore fans had to wait decades to get their team back. But had since transferred their regional love to quarterback Johnny Unitas and The Baltimore Colts. Until THAT team was stolen "literally" in the middle of the night in rented trucks. Then owner Robert Irsay is considered one of worst figures in the pro sports history of this country.

For a good movie on Baltimore's sports woes watch the 30 for 30 documentary "The Band That Wouldn't Die" by Baltimore native Barry Levinson. Man City fans should like it.

I still get fucking emails from the Baltimore Ravens because I went to see City play Inter there back in 2010. Bastards still email me even though I opted out ages ago.

And the worst part is that I am a Patriots fan too. I even told them that in my last opt-out so that they would leave me alone but noooo; they emailed me again about some fucking concert or other happening in their stadium...shower of idiots. Like I needed a reason to dislike the Ravens any more...

Not crazy about the Orioles either TBH. But I will take them over the Yankees every time. Hey I am a Red Sox fan too. I like these American sports ya know. Admittedly, it's been pretty good in Boston these last 15 years or so.

Sure all the Mancs love us going on about baseball on the main forum haha...maybe more for off-topic

Nice post. You know your stuff my friend. That's a great 30 for 30. I'm watching the O's whoop up on the Padres while typing this. Baltimore has had a tough history with the teams leaving, but recently the Ravens have won two Super Bowls since 2000. I moved from Ohio to Rockville, MD outside of DC in 1994, even with all 4 major spots teams we haven't had a championship since I've been here. Haven't really been close either to be honest. Even Cleveland just got one, so I'm hoping our day is coming.

I think City would be smart to partner with an NFL team, like they did with the Yankees.

Still don't know why the Orioles are emailing City fans though...

I'd just like to thank you guys for talking about the Orioles for so long. Google has seen me reading this thread and decided that they must be one of my favourite teams, so it's starting sending news and score alerts to my phone and watch...

No mention of the great run they had in the 1890's? "Wee Willie" Keeler and all? Temple Cup Champions on multiple occasions? You plastic O's fans need to broaden your knowledge a bit I think. ;)

And those who suspect this was posted 100% to establish that a famous baseballer of the 1890s was named "Wee Willie" Keeler would largely be correct. Was in fact one of the first people elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame IIRC.

Actually, this iteration of the Orioles is actually the old St. Louis Browns who moved there in 1954. Babe Ruth and Lefty Grove never played for the current franchise, they played for a minor league team with the same name.

And don't feel too bad for Baltimore for having the Colts stolen, they did the same thing to Cleveland when they stole the Browns.

Yes I know. And I think the day after the Browns left St. Louis nobody noticed..... except maybe the Yankees who had stolen all their good players.

Bur Cleveland did get back "their Browns" though. And proceeded to draft Johnny Manziel..... who's since dropped football for booger sugar.

The interesting thing about the St. Louis Browns moving to Baltimore was that it was the only team to move from the west to the east. Baseball was in the process of expanding to the west in the 1950s (Athletics to KC, Braves to Milwaukee, Dodgers, Giants) so it was odd to see a team move eastward.

I used to really love baseball. I don't as much any more. It's a dying sport. Many Americans detest it and the popular culture here makes fun of it. "It's not hip. It's too long." I hear cricket in England is the going the same way but I hope not. Nobody hates the American culture more than Americans.

Honestly, it looks like somebody on the City accounts team signed me up, as bizarre as that sounds. I have a suspicion it might be somebody who works on the support team. My accounts are secure and I'm putting it down as a prank. Stupid, probably shouldn't be going on, but from what I can tell there's nothing to worry about.

Went to Camden Yards in 99 when i did camp america and it is a stunning ball park. Did the whole stadium tour and then a game at night and had a fantastic day there. The rest of the city was nothing to write home about, but camden yards was awesome.
