Baltimore Orioles

Been an Orioles fan since I was a boy. Loved Ripken, Fred Lynn, Eddie Murray, Rick Dempsey and many others. Earl Weaver was a tough as nails manager, they don't make them like him anymore.

Watched them play at Memorial Stadium but much prefer Camden Yards. It is a beautiful ballpark.

@willipp you are right Baltimore is a tough city. But, it does have some charm. It is a working class town and the people are very genuine. That being said, The programme The Wire is about and was filmed in Baltimore. My mate that was Baltimore City P.D. for more than a decade says it is just like on The Wire but worse!

I can imagine, I can't remember what the area of Baltimore we stayed in was, but it wasn't the kind of place you took a stroll a round at night. Remember going to a liquor store one night for beer and I luckily a local rescued me as some not so nice locals decided that the tourist buying beer needed some abuse. The area around the Barbour seemed nice and lots of bars and restaurants around a big tall ship.

I read the title wrong.....

I thought it was a request for more balti sauce on the area around the nipples!!!!

I went to see Morrissey in Baltimore in 2007 at The Rams Head!

Went to my 1st baseball game the other week, the Tampa Bay Yankees v fuck knows who. The TBY are the NY Yankees feeder team and play at the Yankees spring training ground.

Anyway maybe I should move this thread to off topic?

I used to really love baseball. I don't as much any more. It's a dying sport. Many Americans detest it and the popular culture here makes fun of it. "It's not hip. It's too long." I hear cricket in England is the going the same way but I hope not. Nobody hates the American culture more than Americans.

Not watched a baseball game since they went on strike. I used to go and watch the Blue Jays all the time before that.
These multi millionaires shit all over the fans and for that they can go fuck themselves. Same goes for hockey too.

much like premier league footballers then?

Who knew there were so many O's fans/historians on Bluemoon!

As much as a hate to admit it, you're 100% correct. Here in DC we have Bryce Harper and his "make baseball fun again" campaign. To be honest, I find it hard to watch on TV at times. I don't know if there's any empirical data to back this up but... If you look at the amount of public interest of baseball vs soccer (aka football) 20-30 years ago compared to how it is now in 2016, you'd see a huge noticeable negative trend vs a very noticeable positive trend. Give it another 20-30 years and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if soccer will have surpassed baseball.

Went to Camden Yards in 99 when i did camp america and it is a stunning ball park. Did the whole stadium tour and then a game at night and had a fantastic day there. The rest of the city was nothing to write home about, but camden yards was awesome.

I don't think I can truly put into words how much I love Camden Yards, and how much it meant to my childhood. Probably like many of you feel about Maine Rd/the Etihad. It has a nice vintage, nostalgic feel to it, although it isn't all that old. I love "the warehouse" in right field and the fisherman's tale of when Ken Griffy Jr. hit it in on the fly in batting practice of the home run derby. I love Eutaw St., Boogs BBQ, and the beautiful city backdrop. It has much more personality than the generic, mega stadium that is Nats Park.

One of my favorite things about baseball is that every stadium and field of play is unique.

Sure all the Mancs love us going on about baseball on the main forum haha...maybe more for off-topic

Well now that you are doing it, what is the point of the game when even regular match goers may not have any intention to watch nowhere near the whole game.
And with the 160 games (?) = most of them are absolutely pointless and the clubs are just milking fans for more

Granted, my only source for this is a bartender from NYC who claimed to be a ST holder at Mets

Do not talk to me about striking baseball players after the world serise Jays v Phillies, I booked to go to Philly for a Mets game, sorted hotels out, flights, then the strike, not a happy bunny. ( Buckshot I know we disagree re the Mets but that Philly team I rooted for) So players on strike holds no truck with me and I'm with Barcon.

Worst baseball fans in the MLB! If you don't buy that then surely you'll agree worst fans of a good team.

Nationals games attendees are mostly men who look as if they haven't and couldn't play a sport and mostly care if their hair gel is working and if they look good on Facebook, twitter or Instagram. The women are pretty but vapid, not sports fans and the same as men for social media at games.

Their radio ads are "hit for the social cycle" for ffs. They have the reigning NL MVP, one of the best, if not the best, pitching rotations in baseball and they are pimping player chia pets and you can play cornhole in the stadium with friends as why you should come. Don't get me started on beer prices around the stadium.

Last time I was at an Orioles game I had 6 Natty Bo (I know I know) tall boys at a bar out side the stadium. Cost me $12. Would never find that in D.C. Plus, most , not all but, most people there give a shit about watching the game and know.something about the team or baseball in general. Would rather see a game in Bawlmer.

Not anti-Nats they are a fun team. Their "fans" ruin it for me. Remind me of the rags... ;)

No, Nats fans are not like rag fans. Rag fans are glory hunters. The Nats haven't won anything. Ever. Currently, the Nats are actually a good team, and the Rags are playing in the Europa League. The only similarity they share is the color red.

BUT...

As a Nats and O's fan, who has been to plenty of games, I won't argue with you with the rest of your points. As I mentioned earlier, I usually go to one or two Nats vs O's games a year. Even at Nats Park, you'll see more orange than red.

I understand not being "Anti-Nats", but being "anti-Nats fans". You're absolutely correct about the fanbase not actually being huge fans of the team. The games which get the biggest turnout are always the booble head, or Chia pet giveaway day.

There are some beautiful women at Nats (and O's) games, which to be 100% honest, is probably why I go to some of the games. I'm 27, there's a lot of people in my age group, many of them have lived in DC for about 3 years after they got a job with the DOJ or some other government organization. Most of the Nats "fans" are probably actually from some small town a thousand miles away. Once or twice a year, the Nats do have a "Yoga in the outfield" night before the game. Unfortunately I've never made it to one. I can only imagine doing yoga on a MLB outfield with hundreds of women around. Sounds like a dream.

Beer prices are no different than any other stadium I've been to in America and I've been to dozens. Beer is expensive at sports games, doesn't matter where you are. They have $5 domestic 16oz cans inside the ballpark before first pitch at the porch thing (Can't remember the actual name, Red Porch maybe). My favorites around the Nats stadium are Gordon Biersch and the Bullpen. Try The Bullpen (you can't miss it, it's huge) if it's cheap drinks and a fun atmosphere pre/post game that you're looking for. The first one is on me!

I do love Pickles and all those bars outside of Camden Yards. Not very family frenziedly, but for me at this point in my life I'm not really looking for family friendly bars to drink at pre-game.

However, comparing the fan bases of the O's and Nats is not necessarily a fair comparison. The O's have been around forever. The Nats have been around a little over a decade. Many people in DC are not lifelong DC area residents as I mentioned earlier. And the one's that are lifelong DC people (like myself) grew up as O's fans. Nats fans are being grown organically for the first time now. Thank God for Bryce, or even fewer of the kids around here would care about the Nats.

Like I said, I'm a fan of both the Nats and the O's. My girlfriend is a big O's fan (for a female) and we go to both teams games each year, I've started to shift to more of a Nats fans in the last year or two since we've been dating to make it kind of playful rivalry thing between us. "If the O's beat the Nats, I'll give you a _____ job" ;) That kind of thing.

Ohh and btw....

The Nats are 13th in the league with average attendance of 31,135.

The O's are 20th in the league with average attendance of 25,764.

For anyone who read this all the way to the end, I reward you with the ABSOLUTE best thing the Nationals game day experience has to offer. The world famous "President's Race" which happens every night.

For the record "On October 3, the final day of the 2012 regular season, Teddy finally won his first race, breaking a 525-race losing streak with help from a poorly designed Phillie Phanatic. The victory marked the first time the Nationals earned a playoff appearance since moving to Washington in 2005 and the first playoff game in Washington since 1933 when the team in Washington was the Senators."

Wasnt trying to be a dick. I hope I didn't come across that way. Yeah, inside the park prices are the same/similar everywhere whether MLB, NFL or NHL. But Baltimore seems to be and maybe I'm wrong have good prices outside.

I'd guess the reason the Nats have such good attendance compared to the Orioles the "social" aspect, lobbying groups buying season tickets and more disposable income for DC residents.

For what it is worth to you, I was born in the Columbia Hospital for Women, I believe it is condos now. I don't live in DC anymore, but I'm one of the few people I work with and know that can claim they were actually born in D.C.

I've been to a O's Nats game in DC And you right PLENTY of orange for sure. Heck, it is what I grew up with.

Yeah I'm not anti Nats at all. I actually bought one of the sweet red white and blue New Era flex fit caps this year. Looks good on me too. Hate to say it but it better than my orange and black. :)

Sorry for the rambling, thirsty Thursday and all...

I understand bro, and don't worry you didn't come off as a dick. By all means, ramble on, I enjoy it...it's a Summer night, what else are we going to do, watch a baseball game? Happy Thirsty Thursday my man.

Ehhh what was the Nats attendance 5 years ago before they were any good? I live in DC by way of Philadelphia, and for a team that's only been around 15 years and been good for about 3 of them, the fans have reaaaaaaaaally only come out of the woodwork the past few seasons. 5 or 6 years ago if you went to a Nats vs Mets/Phillies/etc. game, there'd be more opposition fans then Nats fans. I suspect it will be the same when Harper inevitably walks in free agency in 2018.

Not that I'm "anti-nats", DC is just hard to build a sports following because of the large amount of transplants and the short amount of time people live here.

But agreed, it is a fantastic ballpark and experience.

I unfortunately agree. DC is by no means a great sports town. Hope Harper stays, he seems to like it here, so i don't know about inevitable but as long as he doesn't go to the Yankees I'll be able to accept it. We're getting way off topic now, but I'm sure you heard about Kevin Durant not wanting to come home to play for the Wizards because the Wizards fans cheered him when he was playing for the opposition. That about sums up DC sports. The Nats, Wizards and even Capitals fans are fickle and definitely not the most supportive fanbases, I won't deny it.

As I'm sure you know, DC sports has and always will be mainly focused on the (NFC EAST champion) Washington Redskins.

Agreed, although I was surprised Durant didn't even go to INTERVIEW with the Wizards. I mean, I didn't think there was a chance in hell he'd go there...but he's interviewing with the fucking Celtics, might as well throw the hometown a bone.

But yeah definitely a Football town, although they need a new stadium that's not impossible to get to!

Yeah I saw KD met with Kerr, the splash bros, Draymond etc. today. It was surprising he didn't even give the 'Zards a chance to pitch him. KD was a year above me in school and played his senior year of high school ball at Montrose Christian which is 5-10 mins from where I grew up. I also played high school basketball but was a public school kid. We had a few pre-season scrimmages/holiday tournaments/summer league type scrimmages against Montrose Christian. Never got the chance to actually be on the court with him, but I remember him as a high school player. He's still a pretty slim dude, but in high school he was freakishly skinny.

And yes, sitting in traffic at FedEx Field for 2+ hours JUST to get on 495 after a Redskins loss is as close as I've ever come to wanting to murder another human being haha. A new stadium in the city limits with tons of cheap parking and easy Metro access would be great. Plus, it doesn't feel right for the Washington Redskins to play outside of the city of Washington (cough, cough, rags, cough, cough).
