Did I mention I'd been on Eggheads?
So this thread is about which bands did you discover that you had never heard of previously, that you saw as a support act at a gig you attended and went on to love.
For me these four.....

James (supported The Smiths at Palace Theatre, Manchester 1985)

Inspiral Carpets (supported The Wedding Present at The Ritz, Manchester 1988)

The Thrills (supported Morrissey at Royal Albert Hall, London, 2002)

Girl In A Coma (supported Morrissey in New York / Boston 2007)

Honourable mentions to
The Comsat Angels (support to U2 at Warwick Uni 1981)
The Red Guitars (support to The Smiths at Lanchester Poly, 1984)

I saw Tom Verlaine at the Hacienda in 1984 or 85.
They were a really brilliant band and really stood out in the late 70’s.
Live…..they didn’t stand a chance against Blondie and the gorgeous Debbie Harry.
Rarely hear any Television these days - I still have all their 70’s classics on vinyl.

The Music supporting The Charlatans (around 2002)

The energy of the lead singer and the tunes just had me hooked......second album was shite though imho!!
Forgot about The Music! Going to pop them on queue now!

Jake Bugg supporting Dry the River.
