Bands you discovered as support acts

saw that tour with mott the hoople with Queen as support band in Manchester, the next best was seeing black sabbath at the appolo with Van Halen as support band
bloody hell I feel old now!

Japan supporting Blue Oyster Cult .... still love both bands.

Saw Van Halen open for Sabbath, but had already heard of VH prior.

Talking Heads with Ramones.

One I wish I had seen, Lynyrd Skynyrd supporting Golden Earring at the Free Trade Hall.

Chemical Brothers were on with Oasis at the MEN mid 90’s, I thought, that’s a racket they’re making and still do.

Each to his own, just not my kind of music.

Cabbage supported The Fall April 19th 2016. Saw them a number of times after that all over Manchester. Burned very bright for a short time and now, sadly, they have split.

So this thread is about which bands did you discover that you had never heard of previously, that you saw as a support act at a gig you attended and went on to love.
For me these four.....

James (supported The Smiths at Palace Theatre, Manchester 1985)

Inspiral Carpets (supported The Wedding Present at The Ritz, Manchester 1988)

The Thrills (supported Morrissey at Royal Albert Hall, London, 2002)

Girl In A Coma (supported Morrissey in New York / Boston 2007)

Honourable mentions to
The Comsat Angels (support to U2 at Warwick Uni 1982)
The Red Guitars (support to The Smiths at Lanchester Poly, 1984)

Some concert for James, thought they smashed it on the night.

The Slow Readers Club supporting Puresence at Gorilla. Now they are probably my favourite band.
Also Working Men's Club supporting New Order at Heaton Park last summer. I'd heard a couple of their singles on 6Music, but they blew me away with their intense live performance.

Depeche Mode at a shitty nightclub in Essex called Crocs that we had snuck into in January 1981. It clicked when I saw them on TOTP a few months later. Hated them ever since. Awful band. I wouldn't suggest seeing them live either.

I have no idea how I got into The Slow Readers. Great band though.

Def Leppard supported AC/DC at the Manchester Apollo in 1979. Loud as I recall.
Yes they did, but I was aware of them before that. I came into the thread ready to post because I've seen some great support bands but thinking about it I don't think I've ever seen a good support act that I wasn't aware of before I saw them.

SQUEEZE : 3rd on a bill behind Eddie & The Hot Rods + Radio Stars
Salford University Union 1978.
"Take Me I'm Yours" had just been released and became their first hit.
