It'd be unusual to play a friendly at that stage of the season, imo. I'm pretty sure the MEN report, that the OP mentioned, talked in terms of an invitation to play in it. It's this fixture- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Gamper_Trophy As I edited in the last post, it's still rival TBC atm, officially.
They've got to play someone though. Hughes might fancy it? He might see it as a useful experience, and there was a lot of talk a few months ago about meetings trying to build relations with bigger clubs on the continent- maybe it'd help? If you have a look, City appear to have made a showing in the 1982 competition, it's about bloody time we got an invite back!
