It'd be unusual to play a friendly at that stage of the season, imo. I'm pretty sure the MEN report, that the OP mentioned, talked in terms of an invitation to play in it. It's this fixture- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Gamper_Trophy As I edited in the last post, it's still rival TBC atm, officially.

They've got to play someone though. Hughes might fancy it? He might see it as a useful experience, and there was a lot of talk a few months ago about meetings trying to build relations with bigger clubs on the continent- maybe it'd help? If you have a look, City appear to have made a showing in the 1982 competition, it's about bloody time we got an invite back!

we played there in 1974. for barcelona's 75th annniverary. lost 3-2 tuart was outstanding. what a stadium it was even then.

Sports papers like AS over here are reporting it as very likely.

The Joan Gamper trophy is Barcelona's own one-off pre-season presentation game, similar to our good old Tommy Cook trophy. They only pick quality opposition, just look at the last few opponents:

Boca Juniors
Inter
Bayern
Jucentus
Milan

If the game is on, here's one blue who'll be travelling from one side of Spain to the other on August 19.
