Bayern Munich (Friendly) | Post Match Thread

Bit of a Curate’s egg for me.

Yes it’s only pre season but the way Harland took his goal is exactly what we’ve been missing the past couple of seasons.

Clearly on here JWE is highly rated but felt he was out of position upfield too many times and ended up in a foot race to get back.

Hopefully this is part of a learning curve for him.

Thought Rico Lewis was a great sub, wasn’t fazed by the situation and really tried to drive forward.

That's how all of our full backs play.

Grealish looks a different animal with a striker.
Haaland looks a different animal to any striker I've seen in a City shirt.
I thought Aké, Rodri, Bernardo, de Bruyne and Grealish all looked pretty much 100%.
Dias, Walker and Mahrez not miles off.
Cancelo looked pretty rusty but played a few beautiful passes. Wilson-Esbrand and Lewis both impressed.
We seem to have a couple of potential back up full-backs there.
All in all, happy days.

A good performance & brilliant goal from Erling! We looked dominant & VERY threatening with him on the pitch & his goal is the type of opportunity we kept squandering the last few seasons, because no one had that strikers instinct to be in the right place at the right time.

The stop start nature of the match due to lightning & the constantly changing info about how long the match would be, made it difficult for me to get into the rhythm of the game, but it was a good display by us & we look a lot fitter than I thought we would be.

Esbrand played very well! Well enough to be relied upon as understudy to a new LB for a season? I dunno. BUT if we do get Cucurella, I wouldn't be averse to Esbrand being his backup, because we've always got Cancelo who can move to LB if needed.

Talking of Cancelo, he had a good game too, as did Grealish. Grealish seriously needs finishing practice though!

Good to see Dias back. KDB was my MoTM after another dominant display. I'll be gutted to lose Bernardo. He was his usual effervescent self & always seemed to be there when needed.

Alvarez got a few more minutes under his belt, but seems more of a No10, than a clinical No9. Rodri was imperious & dominated the midfield from deep & brilliantly protected Aké & Dias throughout.

I'll be gutted if Aké goes, as he's shown his qualities this pre-season, especially how good a footballer he is. The youngsters look a promising bunch for us & I was gutted that both Palmer & Lewis didn't get on the score sheet.

If we get the LB situation sorted, hold onto Bernardo & get a world class replacement for Sterling (which I think we badly need), we'll be fuckin frightening!

Finally, what the fuck's happened to Sané? :-| He was totally anonymous tonight & a pale shadow of the emerging Superstar who left us 3 years ago! No wonder Bayern are looking to move him on. I caught sight of him & Pep talking at the end & it wouldn't surprise me if Sané was apologising to the Boss & begging Pep to take him back!

It's been a short, weird & fractured pre-season, but we've acquitted ourselves very well, albeit being without Stones, Laporte, Foden & Gundog. Does anyone know the "Red Tape" which stopped all apart from Laporte (apparently he's at the Etihad recovering from injury) from travelling?

The only thing I could think of was no covid jabs or recent criminal convictions....

It may seem an obvious point but Haaland gives us a level of threat to the opponents that could bring our football to another level. His pace, power and intelligent running, especially in transition, will create even more space for our other attacking and creative players. World class players have an impact, well in excess of even extremely gifted players. Even in a friendly game I sensed a fear and disorganisation in the Bayern side against a more unpredictable City threat. We are going to knock it long and early at times to Haaland and also work it through the lines with short passing. Unlike what the media seem to be suggesting, I believe he is going to fit in very well into our system, but is going to give us further dimensions.

Absolutely, just felt personally that he was caught out a few times due to his positioning.

Am I criticizing him? Not at all. Just a personal view.

I’m sure that will come with experience hence the comment that it is part of his learning curve

I dont think teams will be able to push up as much. There is a threat in behind now. Should give us more space to play youd think.

We looked ok without him.
We did which is why I said it was a strong performance. I always liked Jesus at RW, with his pressing, speed and the ability to whip in those early crosses without having to cut inside.

What's done is done though and we looked much better when Palmer came on.

For a 19 year old playing against one of the biggest teams in the world I was amazed by his confidence on the ball. He had no hesitation in running at and taking on their top defenders. Very few defenders have such bravery and dribbling ability...what an exciting prospect he is.
