Hi, here from the Bayernforums as well.
I am very excited about this group because it means that we get to have exciting matches from the get-go rather than waiting until the playoffs. Obviously everyone is talking about Bayern and ManCity but I think Napoli will cause both of us a lot of trouble and we should not consider them out as potential group toppers.
In terms of talent on the pitch both teams are stacked, you guys have a deeper bench than us for obvious reasons but starting 11 vs starting 11 its arguable. I think these are the outside factors revolving around the game for both teams that can make a big impact.
Out of pitch factors
- City's lack of chemistry during the first match, you guys just finished the signings of Aguero and Nasri and they are definitely destined for the starting lineup which means less time to build chemistry unlike Bayern who finished most of their transfer business early.
- League scheduling is another big factor, you guys will have some tough matches around the Bayern match i.e. Chelsea and Arsenal (not that tough i guess xD) which can again stretch you guys thin, even considering your insane bench strength.
- In Bayern's case it is the consistent blows with injuries, specially to Robbery. When we have our attacking quartet on the pitch (not injured) we have one of the best attacks in Europe, the problem is our bench although improved this season still is not that of a major european team (as we rely a lot on unproven youngsters to do what Robbery does).
On the pitch factors
- Mancini vs Heckneyes, both are experienced coaches who understand Champions league football, one is more defensive minded than the other and I think that could be where the difference will be. Will you guys attempt to play defensive at HOME with a strong CDM base ? or will you guys actually attempt to attack us (as you should be considering the recent acquisitions you have). If you guys play defensive + counter-attack against us, you will lose because unlike Bayern under LVG we actually are quick to recover now in losing possession and we have one of the best specialist keepers in 1v1's in Neuer (so not that worried about counter attacking play against us)...and it will only be a matter of time before some Robben or Muller magic can carve out a goal for us (specially if you let us control the tempo by sitting back).
- Central midfield vs Central midfield is where the game is always won or lost for Bayern. Our success 2 years back was as much due to Schweinsteiger's superiority in the middle as it was to Robben's wunderstrikes. There is little doubt that you guys have a much stronger strike force than us with Aguero and Dzeko but our midfield strength in Robben-Muller-Ribery is better than Silva-Nasri-Johnson etc and I think therefore the real battle will be when De Jong / Toure match up against Schweini and Gustavo (and i see us taking that).
- Who needs a defense when we have Neuer? xD. Guy is made for the big games.
